Just Whistle A Bit Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CCDD EFEF GGEE HIHI JJKK ELEL MMNN

Just whistle a bit if the day be darkA
And the sky be overcastB
If mute be the voice of the piping larkA
Why pipe your own small blastB
-
And it's wonderful how o'er the gray sky trackC
The truant warbler comes stealing backC
But why need he come for your soul's at restD
And the song in the heart ah that is bestD
-
Just whistle a bit if the night be drearE
And the stars refuse to shineF
And a gleam that mocks the starlight clearE
Within you glows benignF
-
Till the dearth of light in the glooming skiesG
Is lost to the sight of your soul lit eyesG
What matters the absence of moon or starE
The light within is the best by farE
-
Just whistle a bit if there 's work to doH
With the mind or in the soilI
And your note will turn out a talisman trueH
To exorcise grim ToilI
-
It will lighten your burden and make you feelJ
That there 's nothing like work as a sauce for a mealJ
And with song in your heart and the meal in its placeK
There 'll be joy in your bosom and light in your faceK
-
Just whistle a bit if your heart be soreE
'Tis a wonderful balm for painL
Just pipe some old melody o'er and o'erE
Till it soothes like summer rainL
-
And perhaps 't would be best in a later dayM
When Death comes stalking down the wayM
To knock at your bosom and see if you 're fitN
Then as you wait calmly just whistle a bitN
