Are dole and grief to day	B
For the flower of all the Indies	C
Has gone the silent way	B

And where the dancers gather	A
The silence of the tomb	D

Across the burning sands	F
Old Akbar wanders madly	G
And wrings his fevered hands	F

And ever makes his moaning	H
To the unanswering sky	I
For Sutna lovely Sutna	J
Who was so fair to die	I

For Sutna danced at morning	H
And Sutna danced at eve	K
Her dusky eyes half hidden	J
Behind her silken sleeve	K

Her pearly teeth out glancing	H
Between her coral lips	L
The tremulous rhythm of passion	J
Marked by her quivering hips	L

As lovely as a jewel	M
Of fire and dewdrop blent	I
So danced the maiden Sutna	J
In gallant Akbar's tent	I

And one who saw her dancing	H
Saw her bosom's fall and rise	N
Put all his body's yearning	H
Into his lovelit eyes	N

Then Akbar came and drove him	O
A jackal from his door	P
And bade him wander far and look	Q
On Sutna's face no more	P

Some day the sea disgorges	N
The wilderness gives back	R
Those half dead who have wandered	I
Aimless across its track	R

And he returned the lover	A
Haggard of brow and spent	I
He found fair Sutna standing	H
Before her master's tent	I

Not mine nor Akbar's Sutna	J
He cried and closely pressed	I
And drove his craven dagger	A
Straight to the maiden's breast	I

Oh weep oh weep for Sutna	J
So young so dear so fair	S
Her face is gray and silent	I
Beneath her dusky hair	S

And wail oh wail for Akbar	A
Who walks the desert sands	N
Crying aloud for Sutna	J
Wringing his fevered hands	N

The tears of sorrow run	J
But the corpse of Sutna's slayer	A
