It's hot to day The bees is buzzin'A
Kinder don't keer like aroun'A
An' fur off the warm air dancesB
O'er the parchin' roofs in townA
In the brook the cows is standin'A
Childern hidin' in the hayC
Can't keep none of 'em a workin'A
'Cause it's hot to dayC
-
It's hot to day The sun is blazin'A
Like a great big ball o' fireD
Seems as ef instead o' settin'A
It keeps mountin' higher an' higherD
I'm as triflin' as the childrenA
Though I blame them lots an' scoldE
I keep slippin' to the spring houseF
Where the milk is rich an' coldE
-
The very air within its shadderD
Smells o' cool an' restful thingsG
An' a roguish little robinA
Sits above the place an' singsG
I don't mean to be a shirkin'A
But I linger by the wayC
Longer mebbe than is needfulH
'Cause it's hot to dayC
-
It's hot to day The horses stumbleH
Half asleep across the fiel'sG
An' a host o' teasin' fanciesG
O'er my burnin' senses stealsG
Dreams o' cool rooms curtains loweredI
An' a sofy's temptin' lookJ
Patter o' composin' raindropsG
Or the ripple of a brookJ
-
I strike a stump That wakes me suddenA
Dreams all vanish into airD
Lordy how I chew my whiskersG
'Twouldn't do fur me to swearD
But I have to be so keerfulH
'Bout my thoughts an' what I sayG
Somethin' might slip out unheededK
'Cause it's hot to dayG
-
Git up there Suke you Sal git overD
Sakes alive how I do sweatL
Every stitch that I've got on meM
Bet a cent is wringin' wetL
If this keeps up I'll lose my temperD
Gee there Sal you lazy bruteN
Wonder who on airth this weatherD
Could 'a' be'n got up to suitN
-
You Sam go bring a tin o' waterD
Dash it all don't be so slowH
'Pears as ef you tuk an hourD
'Tween each step to stop an' blowH
Think I want to stand a meltin'A
Out here in this b'ilin' sunA
While you stop to think about itO
Lift them feet o' your'n an' runA
-
It ain't no use I'm plumb fetaggledO
Come an' put this team awayG
I won't plow another furrerD
It's too mortal hot to dayG
I ain't weak nor I ain't lazyM
But I'll stand this half day's lossG
'Fore I let the devil make meM
Lose my patience an' git crossG
