My trade was old when the world was newA
Ere the pyramids rose by the NileB
Men quitted their wives and gave me their goodsC
For the warmth of my kiss and my smileB
For never was wife who could hold her manD
By the honeymoon's afterglowE
Did I veil mine eyes and beckon to himF
God's truth and 'tis you who knowE
-
My trade was old when the world was newA
Long ere Caesar ruled in RomeG
To spend their gold in a harlot's cellH
Patricians quitted homeG
And high born dames since the world beganD
Have learned to sit and to sighI
And to patiently wait for their lords to leaveJ
The woman that you pass byI
-
I'm only a pawn in the game called lifeK
Yet I take what you never could holdL
I garner the kisses you'd barter life forM
And with them I gather your goldL
I garner the best of your manhood's primeN
Then quit them when shattered in healthO
I bring to heel the ones that you loveP
And smiling I shear them of wealthO
-
To garner the wealth that you hold in storeM
I must keep me surpassing fairQ
For the life that I lead is an open bookR
And the game that I deal is squareQ
Stop think of the maids and wives you knowE
As you drift thru life's subtle gameS
How many are dealing as straight as II
How many can say the sameS
-
You give your all and you slave your lifeK
In a struggle to hold one manD
You think you're paid if he call you wifeK
And be true to you for a spanD
You keep his house and you bear his childT
And you walk with your head held highI
But most of his love and his kisses goE
To the woman that you pass byI
-
The favors you give I sell for goldL
And men prize what costs them highI
You never will learn that love goes outU
With the tear in a woman's eyeI
That the patient drudge who sits at homeG
And learns to save and to mendV
Can never hold the light of loveP
But is doomed to lose in the endV
-
So I follow the old dishonored tradeW
Bedecked in garments fineX
And the cream of the earth is saved for meY
In raiment and food and wineX
And life to me is a merry gameS
Tho sometimes I weep and sighI
For deep down in your heart do you envy meY
The woman that you pass byI
