Where the ragged snow capped saw toothA
Cuts the azure of the skyB
And watches o'er the lonely landC
As ages wander byB
Where the sentinel pines in grandeurD
Murmur to the glacier streamE
As it ice gorged gluts the canyonF
Never brightened by the gleamE
Of sun at brightest noon dayG
Nor moon of Arctic nightH
And whose only link with HeavenF
Is the fitful Northern LightH
Where the Whistler shrills in triumphI
And the Big Horn dreams in peaceJ
Where the Brown Bear skulks to coverK
Up where silence holds the leaseJ
Where the land is as God left itL
Nor has known the tread of manM
There's a treasure ledge a waitingN
Go and find it if you canM
-
If your heart be steeled to triumphI
Nor beats less at your defeatO
Can you watch your whole world melt awayG
And still smiling fortune greetO
Will your heart and brain and sinewM
Crowd you on when hunger's painM
Gnaws your belly and you're beatenM
Can you lose and fight againM
Can you raise the cup of fortuneM
To your lips and bravely quaffI
The draught she has prepared for youP
And win or lose and laughI
Can you see the fruits of hardshipsQ
Centered on one desperate throwR
And know Fate's dice are loadedS
Nor curse to see them goR
Then take your burden up againM
And stagger up the trailT
You're bound to make a winningN
Cause you don't know how to failT
-
I who've spent my youth in followingN
The lure of hidden goldU
Must pass the buck to NatureK
And admit I'm growing oldU
And yet each spring I hear it callingN
And it's music to my earsV
The call of lonely placesW
That I've listened to for yearsV
It's cost me all most men hold dearX
Some forty years of lifeI
And all the joys that others getY
In babies home and wifeI
My life's been all to morrowsV
And my family only dreamsV
And to the average plodderX
I've missed it all it seemsV
Still I've never taken ordersV
And I've always liked the gameZ
And if life could be lived overX
Why I'd live it just the sameZ
