For a thousand years the Devil crouchedA
On the white hot flags of hellB
For a thousand years the Devil cursedC
The imps that had chained him wellB
For a thousand years the Devil sulkedD
And planned with his hell trained brainE
Of the things he'd do when his term was thruF
And freed from the blistering chainE
-
He'd even the score with the men of earthG
And give them back pain for painE
For all of the days he had felt the blazeH
And the sear of the galling chainE
And it came to pass when his time was upI
And hell's gates were opened wideJ
That all hell rang and the clinkered imps sangK
When the Devil passed OutsideJ
-
I have served my time the Devil saidL
As he halted by heaven's gateM
I have sweated in hell for a thousand yearsN
And each year was a year of hateM
I have framed my plans for a thousand yearsN
I have worked out the details wellB
Now I'd have a place near the human raceO
As a sort of a prep school for hellB
-
The sons of men on the earth belowP
Have scarcely a chance to sinQ
Churched belled and gowned they mope aroundR
By precept all sealed inQ
There is never a sin for lust of fleshS
Nor sin for a man struck blowP
And the red blood crime of the olden timeT
Has passed with the long agoP
-
Hell's motley crew is scarce worth coalU
When they come to the thing called deathV
They squat on the coals with the real damned soulsW
And listen with bated breathV
To the tales of the earth when the world was newF
When a man had to fight for his ownX
When he took his wife at the risk of his lifeY
And killed for a half baked boneX
-
Now I'd build a place where a man might sinQ
For the sake of his own desiresZ
Make his the cause and his the lawsA2
And the penalty mine own firesZ
Hast a place on earth to breed such menB2
Each for his own deeds blamedC2
If you'll give me a place I'll breed a raceO
That hell may not be shamedC2
-
The God King sighed as he searched the platC2
And the map of the earth belowP
I have given a place for every raceO
In the belt from snow to snowP
I have given a home to each bird and beastC2
For even the fox has its holeU
I have given all land to the sons of manD2
And I've builded a home for his soulU
-
In the seven days that I toiled belowP
When I builded the seas and landsE2
There was much to do and I didn't get thruF
And one place unfinished standsE2
It's the part of my work that I really regretC2
For I know it's the worst of the lotC2
It's known down below as The Land of the SnowP
Or The Country that God forgotC2
-
It stands apart by the Northern PoleU
Unfinished forgotten aloneX
And no man's hand has won this landC2
And no man calls it his ownX
The country is made up of odds and endsF2
Unfinished mountain and swamp and lakeG2
Stuff that couldn't be used when the earth was fusedC2
If you want it it's yours to takeG2
-
I'll take this plot the Devil quothV
For I like your description wellB
Yes I'll take this place and I'll mould a raceO
That will be a credit to hellB
Then he whistled an imp from the uttermost partC2
And they dropped as the comets whirledC2
Past the white baked stars past Venus and MarsH2
To the unfinished part of the worldC2
-
He landed at last on Denali's crestC2
And he gazed on his acres wideC2
Barren and bleak from each mountain peakI2
And swamp to the Arctic's tideC2
The Devil grinned as he stood and gazedC2
Said he This is just what I needC2
It's the place of my plan for the downfall of manD2
Where I'll change his ambition to greedC2
-
Then he summoned the legions of hell to his sideC2
Named an arch imp to straw boss each crewF
Tho they gibbered and cursed each one did the worstC2
With the jobs Satan gave them to doF
They tumbled the mountains high up and on endC2
Piled glaciers where streams ought to beJ2
And swamp land was placed in the desolate wasteC2
That stretched from the hills to the seaJ2
-
They shook down all hell for a climate to fitC2
But they couldn't get suited in hellB
So they took the worst parts and with devilish artsK2
They built one that suited them wellB
They laid out muck swamps where the water lies deadC2
Bred mosquitoes and moose flies and gnatsL2
Put the brown bear that kills on the barren brown hillsM2
And with quill pigs infested the flatsL2
-
They shut off the sun for full half of the yearN2
Made each glacier a blizzard blown trapO2
They strung out volcanoes half way to JapanD2
Each one with a hair trigger capO2
They planned for the coast line a system of stormsP2
Each equipped with a ninety mile breathV
And then spread o'er it all the fog that men callQ2
The North Coast mantle of deathV
-
Then knowing full well that man would not goP
To a Land so forlorn to beholdC2
He salted the hillsides and some of the streamsR2
With nuggets and traces of goldC2
He tinted the hills with a green copper ledgeS2
And covered the valleys with gameT2
All this for a lure then the Devil felt sureU2
That the white man would fall for the sameT2
-
-
-
-
THE LANDC2
-
The lure of the little known placesV2
Still calls as it called to your siresW2
The longing for wide open spacesV2
The perfume of evening camp firesZ
The hunting for treasure unfound yetC2
The knocking at fortune's own gateC2
The doing of deeds for the joy that it breedsX2
Were all used by the Devil as baitC2
-
The summers besprinkled with sunshineY2
The hillsides a riot of bloomZ2
With meadows a color shot grandeurA3
And valleys as still as a tombZ2
With mountains of cloud encased beautyJ2
Or with stars shining down on it allQ2
It's the trails we don't know that call us to goP
And no wonder man heeded the callQ2
-
The winters the trails all unbrokenB3
The far fields that beckon and callQ2
The song of the frost on the runnersZ
And the Northern Lights high over allQ2
The trees in the bend of the riverC3
The streams that nobody has spannedC2
The whisper of gold the story half toldC2
All this by the Devil was plannedC2
-
When the trap of the Devil was readyJ2
Widespread went the whisper of goldC2
And the white men stampeded like cattleD3
There never was tie that could holdC2
The first mad rush to the NorthlandC2
When the scum from the four ends of earthV
Came in with a rush a scramble a crushE3
Like scrap in a fusing pot hurledC2
-
They came all untaught and not readyJ2
Spurred on in the mad rush for goldC2
They died here unsung and uncared forF3
Of famine and scurvy and coldC2
They had the same laws as the wolf packG3
Stay up for you die if you failH3
And the paths to the Northern placersZ
Are marked by their graves on the trailH3
-
The towns that they started were plague spotsZ
With brothels and dance halls aglareF3
With cribs faro banks and roulette wheelsZ
And phonographs adding their blareF3
All traps for the young and unwaryF3
All builded to help with his fallQ2
Never dealer was fair never game on the squareF3
For the Devil presided o'er allQ2
-
Nick fiendishly grinned when he saw his workI3
And he chuckled with devilish gleeF3
When it comes to making an up to date hellB
They've sure got to hand it to meF3
For every ten souls that come in to this landC2
There's nine of them headed for hellB
With never a fight the percentage is rightC2
And my prep school is doing quite wellB
-
-
-
Thus for a time he ruled this landC2
Where few might venture forthV
For never a man made law held goodC2
From Dixon's Entrance northV
He held this land in his claw tipped gripJ3
And he took his pay in soulsZ
Theirs was the blame for they played his gameT2
And they paid for it on hell's coalsZ
-
But the Devil lost when the law came inQ
Or the men who made the lawsZ
The gambling hall and the dance hall wentC2
And the Devil was forced to pauseZ
For the life in the land develops menB2
Men of an alien breedC2
A new made lot that couldn't be boughtC2
And strangers to graft or greedC2
-
They loosed the land from the Devil's gripJ3
They pierced the hills with their trailsZ
They flagged the rocks at the harbor's mouthV
They paved the way for the railsZ
They builded a school where the dance hall stoodC2
And they brought in their children and wivesZ
They gave their all to the new land's callQ2
And some of them gave their livesZ
-
Now the pimp and the brothel have passed awayK3
And the gambling hall is a dreamL3
A railroad train now follows the trailH3
Where we followed a nine dog teamL3
A thousand stamps now sing their songM3
Where we panned on the gold shot ledgeS2
And a picture show now marks the lineY2
That once was the frontier's edgeS2
-
The milch cows graze where the brown bear roamedC2
And a saw mill sings its layK3
On a bar in the Yukon RiverF3
Where we panned one summer dayK3
They are raising wheat where the bull moose grazedC2
In the summers of long agoP
It seems kind of strange when we note the changeN3
But we'd rather have it soP
-
-
-
Yet sometimes we dream as we camp at nightC2
In the bend of the river's flowP
Of the land that was of the land we knewF
In the days of the long agoP
The wild free land that bred the menB2
Who fought with might and mainE
And took this land from the Devil's handC2
And we'd like to see it againB2
