I SING the NAMES of JESUS matchless namesB
Highest and holiest Earth or Heaven claimsB
By which alone we may approach to HimC
Before whose faintest ray the sun grows dimC
And all the brightest glory of the skiesD
Like twilight's feeble glimmer fades and diesD
-
MESSIAH CHRIST God's high Anointed OneA
The Eternal Father's well beloved SonA
On whom the mystic oil of Heaven was shedE
What time descending on His sacred headE
The Consecrating Spirit from aboveF
Set Him apart to holiest deeds of loveF
Anointed Prophet from that favored hourG
To teach His Father's will to wield His powerG
Anointed Priest for His own people's sakeH
Himself a sacrifice for sin to makeH
Anointed King unrivalled and aloneI
To reign on universal Empire's throneI
To whose high majesty and regal worthJ
All crowns shall bend in Heaven and in EarthJ
All Powers to Him their cheerful tribute bringK
And all above below confess Him KingK
-
OUR PASSOVER 'Twas night on Egypt's coastL
And all were hushed to rest save Israel's hostL
They silent wakeful harnessed as for flightM
Each in his own hushed dwelling watched that nightM
Through the slow fateful hours of deepening gloomN
The coming of God's Messenger of doomN
Whose piercing eye through the deep awful shadeO
By Judgment's stern uplifted pinions madeO
The blood mark on each dwelling should descryG
Of the slain lamb and seeing pass it byP
-
Thus thus O Soul in that more awful hourG
When the last Judgment's darker shadows lowerG
And swift and stern God's messengers go forthQ
To reap the harvest of this fated EarthJ
If then on thee is found no crimson stainR
Of God's own Lamb on bloody Calvary slainR
If thou art resting not beneath the bloodS
Of that one sacrifice ordained of GodT
Where wilt thou fly where hide thyself awayU
From the dread reck'ning of the Judgment dayU
If resting 'neath the blood for sinners spiltV
Look up the judge Himself has borne thy guilt'V
Justice and Judgement claim thy life in vainR
Since Christ thy Passover Himself is slainR
-
IMMANUEL God with us With us O SoulW
Of this brief utt'rance canst thou grasp the wholeW
Nay comprehend one attribute of GodV
The Maker Sovereign Him who at a nodV
Can hurl all worlds to wreck and with a breathX
Can wake a Universe from night and deathX
And clothe in Beauty's robes of richest bloomN
Ten thousand worlds snatched from chaotic gloomN
-
If not couldst grasp the thought that such as HeY
Clothed in frail human flesh a man should beY
Of us and with us veiled his dazzling rayU
Of awful Godhead and at home in clayU
A living dying man Heaven Earth and HellZ
The mystery fail to solve ImmanuelA2
And yet Faith lays her hand in thineB2
And whispers low Immanuel is mineB2
-
But He has other Names it may be lessC2
Bewildering in their deep mysteriousnessC2
O'er which we oftener linger which we bearG
Oftener to Heaven upon the breath of prayerG
Sweet hallowed home names dearer it may beY
Because first learned beside a mother's kneeY
The tender names of Father Brother FriendV
Names that with all sweet recollections blendV
Names full of high significancy givenA
To Him who intercedes for us in HeavenA
-
FATHER dear name to thought and feeling dearG
Thrice precious ever in the Christian's earG
An earthly father trials may estrangeD2
THE EVERLASTING FATHER knows no changeD2
With tireless patience and unslumbering careG
Watching wherever His earth children areG
Nor failing e'en the faintest cry to hearG
By His weak children breathed into His earG
-
BROTHER our Eldest FIRST BORN FROM THE DEADV
Of all the glorified the Living HEADV
Yet condescending to the youngest childV
With tenderest looks and accents sweet and mildV
Who feels a wrong done to the feeblest oneA
Keenly as though unto Himself 'twere doneA
Who sees no kindness to the humblest shownI
But 'lisas though 'twere to Himself aloneI
And who will judge the wrong the kindness blessC2
With all a brother's truth and tendernessC2
Nay more an earthly brother faints and diesC2
Or faithless oft forgets affections tiesC2
His love enduring as the eternal throneI
No change decay or loss have ever knownI
-
FRIEND there is music in that simple wordV
Which through all time the human heart has stirredV
Earth cannot be a desert joy bereftV
To any heart if but one friend is leftV
Yet friends oft change and friendship proves a nameE2
And death at last must ever quench its flameE2
-
Yet He's a friend than brother closer farG
One whose affection changes cannot marG
One tempted tried and grieved as you have beenF2
Long a lone wanderer through this world of sinF2
Himself without a friend whose steadfast heartV
In His deep cup of anguish shared a partV
-
Friendless He knelt in dark GethsamaneF2
Unfriended hung on Calvary's bloody treeY
And all for what His matchless love to proveG2
For man His enemy O matchless loveF
O wondrous Friendship O unchanging FriendV
Who loving thus should love unto the endV
That evermore the ransomed soul might restV
Its weary head upon His faithful breastV
And feel 'mid all vicissitudes and painsC2
That one true constant loving friend remainsC2
-
Friend Brother Father Could we ask for moreG
Yet these dear names exhaust not half the storeG
REDEEMER SAVIOUR Lo a captive boundV
With chains and fetters wrapped in night profoundV
In helpless hopeless bondage dark I layU
When He in pitying mercy passed that wayU
He saw me hugging close my heavy chainF2
Loving my bonds despite their bitter painF2
Deaf to the music of the songs of HeavenF2
Blind to the light His pitying love had givenF2
Sick unto death yet boastful of my healthH2
Clothed in foul rags yet vaunting of my wealthH2
-
Was that a thing to love or pity NayU
Yet He did stoop on me His hand to layU
Touched my dark eyes and lo the light was mineF2
Ope'd my dull ears to harmony divineF2
Showed me my rags my wretchedness my griefI2
My deadly sickness and then gave reliefI2
Paid my full ransom price warmed cleansed and redV
And clothed in spotless raiment me He ledV
Forth from the dungeon of impurityY
To the pure air of heaven made whole set freeY
Henceforth my all in life or death is thineF2
And thou Redeemer Saviour thou art mineF2
-
Nor yet with these the exultant song should ceaseC2
for this Redeemer is the PRINCE OF PEACEC2
To be redeemed by earthly Prince would beY
High honor lasting joy to him set freeY
Yet earthly princes emulous of fameE2
Oft win their way to power by sword and flameE2
And leave the path by which they reach a throneF2
Red with slain victims in their rage o'erthrownF2
And rudely crushed beneath the maddened treadV
Of fiery Conquest reckless of his deadV
-
But oh how diff'rent is the Prince of PeaceC2
He comes to bid the rage of conflict ceaseC2
He lifts His hand above the stormy seaY
Of human passion surging wrathfullyU
And lo its maddened waves in peace subsideV
Hushed is the tempest roar of power and prideV
The desert and the wilderness rejoiceC2
And life awakes at His creative voiceC2
Peace spans with rainbow arch the weeping skyP
And angels smile from their pure homes on highP
-
And yet our Prince is more He is a PRIESTV
In whom signs symbols offrings all have ceasedV
For more than Priest a SACRIFICE He standsC2
With streaming side and bloody feet and handsC2
Bearing to Heaven not blood of bullocks slainF2
Nor victims' ashes sprinkling the uncleanF2
But His own blood an offering to HeavenF2
That God might thus be just and man forgivenF2
Himself at once Prince Priest and SacrificeC2
Man mediatorial Lord of Earth and SkiesC2
Angels in vain the myst'ry would exploreG
And men and angels mutually adoreG
Yet as though these were not enough we findV
Him stooping still to meet the human mindV
Under still other names His boundless graceC2
And love to symbolize for Adams raceC2
-
See yonder flock upon the mountain bareG
Is there no hand to guide or tend them thereG
When the wild beast comes prowling from his denF2
Who will protect the helpless creatures thenF2
Who when the pastures fail and springs are dryP
Will lead them forth where greener pastures lieP
-
What pitiest thou the helpless flock so HeY
Thy watchful friend in pity thinks of theeY
I the GOOD SHEPHERD am and ye the sheepJ2
With tenderest care my little flock I keepJ2
No ravenous beast shall prey upon my ownF2
They know my voice and follow me aloneF2
-
Is yonder sun a welcome sight to theeY
As up the east he rides exultinglyP
Do the hills wake to beauty as he comesC2
And valleys blush with countless opening bloomsC2
Do the streams sparkle and the woodlands ringK
With the sweet lays the happy warblers singK
He is a SUN and where His radiance streamsC2
Beauty and gladness waken in His beamsC2
The soul expands to perfect leaf and flowerG
And ripening fruitage waits the vintage hourG
Songs of rejoicing float upon the airG
And 'neath His rays 'tis Summer everywhereG
-
Is yonder vine a pleasant goodly thingK
As upward still its laden branches springK
As its ripe clusters woo the longing sightV
To linger still with ever new delightV
I'm the TRUE VINE saith Christ the branches yeY
The living Vine abide ye still in meY
Thus shall my life to every branch be givenF2
Thus shall each branch bring forth the fruit of HeavenF2
-
See yonder traveller in a desert landV
Toils day by day o'er tracks of burning sandV
A lurid sky above beneath aroundV
The dreary desert spreads its wastes profoundV
With blistered feet and aching blood shot eyeP
Long dimly strained some fountain to descryG
Onward he toils while hope as days departV
Grows feebler fainter at his weary heartV
-
On the horizon's verge he sees at lengthK2
A shadowy line and lo his failing strengthK2
In a full tide returns His weary feetV
Speed gladly on by courage rendered fleetV
He gains the fount he drinks and toil and careG
And dread and danger all forgotten areG
-
So to life's weary pilgrim Christ is madeV
In the drear desert a refreshing SHADEV
A FOUNT OF LIVING WATER never dryG
To all the thirsty yielding full supplyG
A WELL OF WATER ever springing upL2
To Life Eternal fount of joy and hopeM2
-
Student of nature dost thou love at mornF2
To tread where earliest flowers the wild adornF2
To view the lowly blossoms of the fieldV
In shady nooks half hidden half revealedV
The wild rose scenting all the dewy airG
The graceful lily bending meekly thereG
-
Then think as with admiring eye you traceC2
Those meek sweet dwellers in each lonely placeC2
That He of whom I sing well knowing howN2
The heart to Natures lovely gifts would bowN2
Would lead your thoughts with gentle winning forceC2
Up from created Beauty to its SourceC2
-
He is the ROSE OF SHARON fairest flowerG
That perfume breathed through Eden's hallowed bowerG
The LILY OF THE VALLEY pensive fairG
With heavenly sweetness flooding all the airG
Thrice sacred symbol breathing evermoreG
Of Him whom angels cease not to adoreG
-
Thou man of Science who with practised eyeG
And glance untiring sweep'st the starry skyG
Speeding in thought along those trackless waysC2
Where planets burn and constellations blazeC2
Leaving uncounted worlds behind thee farG
Listen I am THE BRIGHT AND MORNING STARG
He says and does not thought more gladly strayG
Where the meek herald of the rising dayG
Sits like a peaceful vestal bearing highG
Her radiant urn on the soft eastern skyG
Thence rising seek the Morning Star of HeavenF2
Who to Night's myriad suns their light has givenF2
And bowing low Light's sacred Fount beforeG
In wondering reverential awe adoreG
-
Soul ever groping through the mists of timeO2
To find the path which leads to the sublimeO2
Still heights of God weak are thy steps and slowP
Yet there's a path no fowl of heaven doth knowP
No lion's whelp that secret way hath foundV
No eagle marked it from the heights profoundV
No human art unhelped discerned the roadV
That leadeth up to happiness and GodV
-
Yet anxious Soul dost thou not hear Him sayG
Cease thy vain groping lo I am the WAYG
The way to God the one unerring WayG
All other paths will lend thy feet astrayG
I only WISDOM am the path that liesC2
'Twixt man and God the Sovereign of the skiesC2
-
Seeker of Truth long hast thou striven to findV
This only boon that satisfies the mindV
Through Nature's stores the treasure hast thou soughtV
Hast traversed all the boundless fields of thoughtV
Questioned the lonely night the laughing dayG
The ocean depths the founts that ceaseless playG
Old hoary mountains cliffs and caverns loneF2
Earth's secret depths mysterious unknownF2
Asked of the past the present future strivenF2
To pierce the mysteries unrevealed of HeavenF2
Yet weary and unsatisfied remainedV
Longing for Truth still far off unattainedV
That truth which satisfies the anxious questV
And with the attainment bringeth perfect restV
-
I am the TRUTH saith Christ O wearied oneF2
Tired of thy fruitless search beneath the sunF2
Accept this boon so sacred so divineF2
In simple trust and all thou seek'st is thineF2
Truth that makes free that falsehood cannot dimC
In full completeness all made thine in HimC
-
Lover of life say what wouldst thou not giveP2
To know that thou eternally shouldst liveQ2
Is Death a thing from which to shrink with dreadV
The dreary valley dost thou fear to treadV
What wouldst thou give to pierce the unknown DarkR2
That lies before thy feebly tossing barkR2
And know what anchor in that unknown seaY
Or wreck disastrous there awaiteth theeY
-
Dost trembling cling to this frail thread of lifeS2
Through pain and doubt and weariness and strifeS2
Rather than trust thy dimly groping handV
Its hold to fasten on that unknown landV
Whence none return its secrets to declareG
And tell what bliss or rum waits thee thereG
-
Well mayst thou cling to Earth unless thy earG
Opened has been the voice from Heaven to hearG
To hear the Christ amid Earth's wearying strifeS2
Its toil and tumult say I am the LIFES2
I am THE LIFE oh then undo thy claspT2
On this frail being and with deathless graspT2
Lay hold on Him in whom by whom aloneF2
The bliss of Life Eternal may be knownF2
Failing in this how deep must be the gloomN
The unpierced darkness of the lonely tombN
In this succeeding what exultant dayV
O'er all thy future pours its blissful rayV
-
Is light a blessing He's the soul's clear LIGHTV
The blessed DAY STAR scattering the nightV
Is peace the sweetest boon to mortals givenF2
Jesus is PEACE made manifest from HeavenF2
Is love the bond of life beneath aboveF
In Earth or Heaven His highest name is LOVEF
-
ROCK REFUGE REST a SHIELD in conflict direG
Around His saints A WALL OF LIVING FIREG
STRENGTH HOPE REDEMPTION RIGHTEOUSNESS divineF2
FAIREST AMONG TEN THOUSAND fair that shineF2
On hills Of light by high archangels trodV
Judah's stern LION spotless LAMB OF GODV
THE SON OF GOD THE SON OF MAN THE BREADV
OF LIFE with which each heir of Heaven is fedV
THE RESURRECTION from the dust of deathX
AUTHOR AND FINISHER of all our FaithU2
God's manifested thought Eternal WORDV
By whom creation's eldest depths were stirredV
ALPHA OMEGA FIRST LAST JEHOVAH MANF2
So ends my song just where my song beganF2
JESUS He saves His people from their sinsC2
Thus end all praises where all praise beginsC2
