The night was dark and dreary	A
And the autumn wind went by	B
With a sound like Sorrow's wailing	C
In its sadly mournful cry	B
The yew trees old and drooping	C
Shook in the angry blast	D
And the moon looked pale and tearful	E
Through the clouds that hurried past	D

In a dreary room and fireless	F
With mouldy walls and damp	G
A grey old man was seated	H
Beside a flickering lamp	G
An old man worn and wasted	H
With bent and shivering form	I
And haggard looks sat trembling	C
At the moaning of the storm	I
	-
The casements old and creaking	C
Shook in the angry blast	D
And the pale thin face grew paler	B
As the shrieking winds went past	D
For hovering fiends seemed clutching	C
His treasures from his grasp	J
And unseen fingers tight'ning	C
On his throat their icy clasp	J
	-
Again the strong wind rattled	K
The broken window pane	L
And the dying taper wavered	M
In the rude blast yet again	N
For one brief instant wavered	M
Then paled its sickly light	O
And the shuddering wretch was shrouded	P
In impenetrable night	O
	-
The dull grey light of morning	C
Illumed the mountain height	O
And Earth lay cold and shiv'ring	C
In the blanched autumnal light	O
But a sunbeam struggled faintly	A
Through the Miser's broken shed	Q
And lit the pale set features	F
Of the still unshrouded dead	Q

For there alone and trembling	C
With the horrors of affright	Q
He had met the king of terrors	F
'Mid the darkness of the night	Q
And with gold enough to satiate	Q
A monarch's haughty pride	Q
In fear and rags and misery	A
Of want the wretch had died	Q
