The night was dark and drearyA
And the autumn wind went byB
With a sound like Sorrow's wailingC
In its sadly mournful cryB
The yew trees old and droopingC
Shook in the angry blastD
And the moon looked pale and tearfulE
Through the clouds that hurried pastD
-
In a dreary room and firelessF
With mouldy walls and dampG
A grey old man was seatedH
Beside a flickering lampG
An old man worn and wastedH
With bent and shivering formI
And haggard looks sat tremblingC
At the moaning of the stormI
-
The casements old and creakingC
Shook in the angry blastD
And the pale thin face grew palerB
As the shrieking winds went pastD
For hovering fiends seemed clutchingC
His treasures from his graspJ
And unseen fingers tight'ningC
On his throat their icy claspJ
-
Again the strong wind rattledK
The broken window paneL
And the dying taper waveredM
In the rude blast yet againN
For one brief instant waveredM
Then paled its sickly lightO
And the shuddering wretch was shroudedP
In impenetrable nightO
-
The dull grey light of morningC
Illumed the mountain heightO
And Earth lay cold and shiv'ringC
In the blanched autumnal lightO
But a sunbeam struggled faintlyA
Through the Miser's broken shedQ
And lit the pale set featuresF
Of the still unshrouded deadQ
-
For there alone and tremblingC
With the horrors of affrightQ
He had met the king of terrorsF
'Mid the darkness of the nightQ
And with gold enough to satiateQ
A monarch's haughty prideQ
In fear and rags and miseryA
Of want the wretch had diedQ
