The Eye That Never Sleeps Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFEGGGG HICIGJFJHKGK LMLMNOGOAPAP

When the heavy midnight shadowsA
Gather o'er a slumbering worldB
And the banner folds of darknessC
Are in gloomy pomp unfurledB
Think lone watcher pale and tearfulD
In thy sad unpitied lotE
By the death couch waking weepingF
There is One who slumbers notE
One who though no mourning brotherG
Share thy vigils lone and drearG
Loving pitying as no otherG
Loves or pities watches nearG
-
When the waves o'erwrought by tempestH
Lift their strong arms to the skiesI
And amid the inky darknessC
Shrieks of winds and waters riseI
Mariner 'mid doubt and dangerG
Wildly tossed upon the deepJ
Think o'er all in power presidingF
There is One who does not sleepJ
One who holds the risen tempestH
In obedience to His willK
Who to still its wildest furyG
Need but whisper Peace be stillK
-
When weighed down by heavy anguishL
Waking sad at midnight loneM
Sorrowing mourner thou dost languishL
For affection's missing toneM
When thy heart o'er buried treasuresN
In its uncheered misery weepsO
Think that gently watching o'er theeG
Is an eye that never sleepsO
And above the mournful shadowsA
Lift thy heart so lone and rivenP
Up to Him who 'mid thy sorrowsA
Wooes thee still to hope and HeavenP
