The Drunkard's Child Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGHGIDJD KCACALEM ENJNLOEO HCACCPAP

A little child stood moaningA
At the hour of midnight loneB
And no human ear was list'ningA
To the feebly wailing toneB
The cold keen blast of winterC
With funeral wail swept byD
And the blinding snow fell darklyE
Through the murky wintry skyD
-
Ah desolate and wretchedF
Was the drunkard's outcast childG
Driven forth amidst the horrorsH
Of that night of tempests wildG
The babe so fondly cherishedI
Once 'neath a parent's eyeD
Now laid her down in anguishJ
Midst the drifting snows to dieD
-
Papa papa she murmuredK
The night is cold and drearC
And I'm freezing Oh I'm freezingA
In the storm and darkness hereC
My naked feet are stiff'ningA
And my little hands are numbL
Papa can I not come to theeE
And warm myself at homeM
-
Mamma mamma more wildlyE
The little suff'rer criedN
Forgetting in her anguishJ
How her stricken mother diedN
Oh take me to your bosomL
And warm me on your breastO
Then lay me down and kiss meE
In my little bed to restO
-
Poor child the sleep that gathersH
Thy stiffened eyelids o'erC
Will know no weary wakingA
To a life of anguish moreC
Sleep on the snows may gatherC
O'er thy cold and pulseless formP
Thou art resting calmly restingA
In the wild dark midnight stormP
