-
-
A voice from the distant EastB
A voice from a far off shoreC
A voice from the perishing tribes of EarthD
Has wandered the blue seas o'erE
It comes with a lingering cryF
With a wail of anguish and painG
O brothers our brothers whyF
Do we look for you still in vainG
-
We are weary we droop we dieF
We grope in the deepening gloomH
We look above with despairing eyeF
We drop in the yawning tombH
Our children stretch their handsI
Far over the waters blueJ
And vainly cry from our darkened landsI
Alas how long for youJ
-
Brothers do ye not keepK
Our law of the olden timeL
For which through ages of woe we weepK
In darkness and sin and crimeL
There are sails from the distant WestM
Dotting our waters blueJ
And the feet of strangers our shores have pressedM
But they came not alas from youJ
-
We know there's a God aboveN
We know there's a land of restM
But there's naught that whispers of pard'ning loveN
To our spirits by guilt oppressedM
We call to the earth belowO
To the calm unanswering heavenP
But no voice replies to our cry of woeO
That can tell us of sins forgivenP
-
And yet we look and waitQ
With sorrowing hearts and soreC
If haply we may behold though lateQ
Your sails from the western shoreC
O come with that precious wordR
We lost in the far off yearsS
And tell us the voice of woe is heardR
And God has beheld our tearsT
