RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED TO AN OVERWORKED STUDENTA
-
-
O tyrant soul of mineB
What's the useC
Of this never ceasing toilD
Of this struggle this turmoilD
This abuseC
Of the body and the brainE
Of this labor and this painE
Of this never ceasing strainE
On the cords that bind us twainE
Each to eachF
-
O tyrant soul of mineB
Is it wellG
Thus to waste and wear awayH
The poor fragile walls of clayH
Where you dwellG
Was I made your slave to beI
I the abject you the freeI
That you task me ceaselesslyI
Tyrant soul come answer meI
Is it wellG
-
O tyrant soul of mineB
Don't you knowJ
That in slow but sure decayH
I am wasting day by dayH
While you growJ
None the better for the strainE
On my nerves and on my brainE
For my head's incessant painE
And my sick heart's longings vainE
For reposeK
-
O tyrant soul of mineB
God the goodL
Joined together you and meI
In a wondrous unityI
That we shouldL
Work together not that IM
You degrade and stupefyN
Nor that you His laws defyN
By maltreating ceaselesslyI
Hapless meI
-
O tyrant soul of mineB
By and byN
Weary of your cruel reignE
Quite worn out with toil and painE
I shall dieN
Then when I have passed awayH
And you're asked whose hand did slayH
Your companion of the clayH
Much I wonder what you'll sayH
Soul of mineB
