There's a beautiful Artist abroad in the worldA
And her pencil is dipped in heavenB
The gorgeous hues of Italian skiesC
The radiant sunset's richest dyesC
The light of Aurora's laughing eyesC
Are each to her pictures givenB
-
As I walked abroad yestere'en what timeD
The sunset was fairest to seeE
I saw where her wonderful brush had beenF
Over a maple tree half of it greenG
And the fairiest col'ring that ever was seenG
She had left on that maple treeE
-
There was red of every possible hueH
There was yellow of every dyeI
From the faintest straw tint to orange brightJ
Fluttering waving flashing in lightJ
With the delicate green leaves still in sightJ
Peeping out at the sunset skyI
-
She had touched the beech and the scraggy thingK
In a bright new suit was dressedL
Very queer indeed it looked to meE
The sober old beech tree thus to seeE
So different from what he used to beE
Rigged out in a holiday vestL
-
Red and russet and green and greyM
He had little indeed of goldN
For the beech was never known to be gayM
Being noted a very grave tree alwayO
Never flaunting out in a fanciful wayO
Like other trees we are toldN
-
But the beautiful artist had touched him offP
With an extra tint or soQ
And he held his own very well with the restL
On which I am sure she had done her bestL
Dressing each in the fairiest kind of a vestL
Till the forest was all aglowQ
-
There were the willow that grew by the brookR
And the old oak on the hillS
The graceful elm tree down in the swaleS
The birch the ash and the bass wood paleS
The orchard trees clustering over the valeS
And weeds that fringed the rillS
-
One she had gilt with a flood of goldN
And one she had tipped with flameT
One she had dashed with every hueH
That the laughing sunset ever knewH
And one she had colored it through and throughH
Russet all sober and tameT
-
Now this beautiful artist will only stayO
A very few days and thenU
She will finish her gorgeous pictures allS
And hurry away ere the gusty squallS
Ruins her work and the sere leaves failS
Darkly in copse and glenU
-
Then welcome these pictures so soon to fadeV
While they're fresh and bright and newH
For a frosty night and a gusty dayO
And a withering blight are not far awayO
So enjoy the beautiful while you mayO
It was given good friend for youH
