Stay, Mother, Stay! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFGHIJI KGGG GLMLGNHNMJGJ GOHOGDPD QBGB RHJHSGTGIUVU GOWOXYCYJZGA2Stay mother stay for the storm is abroad | A |
And the tempest is very wild | B |
It's a fearful night with no ray of light | C |
Oh stay with your little child | B |
- | |
Hush darling the mother with white lips said | D |
Lie still till I come again | E |
God's angels blest will watch o'er thy rest | F |
While I am abroad in the rain | G |
Thy father child oh I quake with fear | H |
When I think where he may be | I |
And I dare not stay till the dawn of day | J |
I must hasten forth to see | I |
- | |
Then the young child buried her tangled curls | K |
In the ragged counterpane | G |
While the half clad mother went forth alone | G |
In the blinding wind and rain | G |
- | |
Down many a narrow slippery lane | G |
Down many a long dark street | L |
Went that shivering form thro' the pelting storm | M |
Of wind and rain and sleet | L |
Till nearing a den where inebriate men | G |
With Bacchanal oath and yell | N |
And curse and jeer spent the midnight drear | H |
She reeled in the gloom and fell | N |
For a prostrate form in the pitiless storm | M |
And inky darkness lay | J |
Helpless and prone on the pavement stone | G |
Across her desolate way | J |
- | |
She knelt alone by the fallen one | G |
And murmured in accents low | O |
A name how dear to her girlhood's ear | H |
In the beautiful long ago | O |
But no voice no tone replied to her own | G |
And the cold hand fell like lead | D |
And her wailing cry brought back no reply | P |
As she shrieked he is dead he's dead | D |
- | |
Aye dead God pity thee stricken wife | Q |
God pity thee orphan child | B |
Poor slave to wine what a death was thine | G |
In that wintry tempest wild | B |
- | |
We know not how long that wild drunken song | R |
And those curses assailed her ear | H |
But the morning ray found its early way | J |
To one who no more could hear | H |
For the faithful heart that had borne its part | S |
Awhile through those watches lone | G |
Had grown still it last as the pitiless blast | T |
Swept by her with wrathful tone | G |
But the rumseller he slept quietly | I |
In his chamber of gilded pride | U |
For little he cared how his victims fared | V |
Or whether they lived or died | U |
- | |
Oh the old old strain with its old refrain | G |
Of agony death and woe | O |
Oh the bitter tears that through all the years | W |
Have been flowing and ever flow | O |
Must the ghastly tragedy never cease | X |
Will Manhood never awake | Y |
And by God's great might made strong for the right | C |
Stand up for Humanity's sake | Y |
And wipe the horrible stain away | J |
From his country and his home | Z |
The dark ensangnined loathsome stain | G |
Of the merciless monster Rum | A2 |
