Stay mother stay for the storm is abroadA
And the tempest is very wildB
It's a fearful night with no ray of lightC
Oh stay with your little childB
-
Hush darling the mother with white lips saidD
Lie still till I come againE
God's angels blest will watch o'er thy restF
While I am abroad in the rainG
Thy father child oh I quake with fearH
When I think where he may beI
And I dare not stay till the dawn of dayJ
I must hasten forth to seeI
-
Then the young child buried her tangled curlsK
In the ragged counterpaneG
While the half clad mother went forth aloneG
In the blinding wind and rainG
-
Down many a narrow slippery laneG
Down many a long dark streetL
Went that shivering form thro' the pelting stormM
Of wind and rain and sleetL
Till nearing a den where inebriate menG
With Bacchanal oath and yellN
And curse and jeer spent the midnight drearH
She reeled in the gloom and fellN
For a prostrate form in the pitiless stormM
And inky darkness layJ
Helpless and prone on the pavement stoneG
Across her desolate wayJ
-
She knelt alone by the fallen oneG
And murmured in accents lowO
A name how dear to her girlhood's earH
In the beautiful long agoO
But no voice no tone replied to her ownG
And the cold hand fell like leadD
And her wailing cry brought back no replyP
As she shrieked he is dead he's deadD
-
Aye dead God pity thee stricken wifeQ
God pity thee orphan childB
Poor slave to wine what a death was thineG
In that wintry tempest wildB
-
We know not how long that wild drunken songR
And those curses assailed her earH
But the morning ray found its early wayJ
To one who no more could hearH
For the faithful heart that had borne its partS
Awhile through those watches loneG
Had grown still it last as the pitiless blastT
Swept by her with wrathful toneG
But the rumseller he slept quietlyI
In his chamber of gilded prideU
For little he cared how his victims faredV
Or whether they lived or diedU
-
Oh the old old strain with its old refrainG
Of agony death and woeO
Oh the bitter tears that through all the yearsW
Have been flowing and ever flowO
Must the ghastly tragedy never ceaseX
Will Manhood never awakeY
And by God's great might made strong for the rightC
Stand up for Humanity's sakeY
And wipe the horrible stain awayJ
From his country and his homeZ
The dark ensangnined loathsome stainG
Of the merciless monster RumA2
