ALL PERSON'S HELD AS SLAVES within said designated States and parts of States ARE AND HENCEFORWARD SHALL BE FREEA
Proclamation of Emancipation Jan stB
-
-
Shall be free shall be free lo the strong winds have caught itC
And borne it from hill top to hill top afarD
And echo to answering echo has taught itC
Through the din of the conflict the thunder of warE
It has flashed like the lightning from ocean to oceanF
Across the black face of the skies it has blazedG
And strong men have thrilled with unwonted emotionF
And shouted for joy as they listened and gazedG
-
Shall be free shall be free the poor manacled chattelH
Has caught the sweet word amid fetters and blowsI
It has burst on his ear through the tumult of battleH
Through the shoutings of friends and the cursings of foesI
And lifting his poor fettered hands up to heavenF
He has joined in the song that ascended to GodJ
Or kneeling in trembling rapture has givenF
Thanksgiving to Him who has broken the rodJ
-
Shall be free shall be free there are ears that have listenedK
There are lips that have prayed through long agonized yearsL
There are eyes that with hope's fitful radiance have glistenedK
Yet as hope was deferred have grown heavy with tearsM
Joy joy thou hast heard it at last lonely weeperE
Look up for the prayer of thy anguish is heardN
Look up ye bruised spirits for God is your keeperE
And the heart of His boundless compassion is stirredN
-
Shall be free shall be free O Humanity listenF
The Dawn that long since on the pale Watcher shoneO
Now higher and brighter and clearer has risenF
As the Day star rides on toward the glories of noonP
Those words that rang out from the isles of the oceanF
Sarmatia has echoed from mountain to seaA
And America from her red field of commotionF
He echoes the same stirring words Shall be freeA
-
Hark all the wild air is astir with the tempestQ
The swift lightnings leap in red arrows on highR
Winds shriek to mad winds and the hoarse thunder answerE
As it ploughs its dread path through the shuddering skyR
There are hisses of serpents and howlings of demonsS
And moanings of anguish by land and by seaA
But clearer than angel tones high o'er the tumultT
Rings out the glad utterance they shall be freeA
-
And lo dimly seen on the crest of the billowU
Lashed white by the storm undismayed and sereneV
Moves that form that once bent o'er the sufferer's pillowU
And touched the dim eyes till strange glories were seenV
And sweetly to ears that will patiently listenF
That voice which spake peace to turbulent seaA
Now speaks through the roar of the tempest uprisenF
In tones unmistakable THEY SHALL BE FREEA
