Over the waves of the Western seaA
Led by the hand of Hope she cameB
The beautiful Angel of LibertyA
When the sky was red with the sunset's flameB
Came to a rocky and surf beat shoreC
Lone and wintry and stern and wildD
The waves behind her and wastes beforeC
And the Angel of Liberty pausing smiledD
-
Here O Sister shall be our restE
Softly she sang and the waters shoneF
While a mellower radiance flushed the westE
Lingering mountain and vale uponG
Sweetly the murmurous melody blentE
With flow of rivers and woodland songH
And wandering breezes that singing wentE
Joyously wafted the notes alongH
-
Acadia lifted her mist wreathed browI
Westerly gazing with eager eyeJ
And lakes that sat in the sunset glowK
Flashed back upon her in glad replyJ
On with every murmuring streamL
On with every wandering breezeM
Floated the strain through the New World's dreamL
Till it died on the far Pacific seasM

-
Many a season came and wentE
Many a changeful year sped byJ
Many a forest its proud head bentE
Many a valley looked up to the skyJ
Patient Labor and bold EmpriseN
Art Invention Science SkillO
Each for each 'neath those northern skiesN
Toiled together with earnest willO
-
Up the mountain and down the glenP
And far away to the level WestE
Hosts of dauntless unwearied menP
Onward ever with firm foot pressedE
The blue axe gleamed in the wintry lightE
And forests melted like mist awayQ
Through virgin soils went the ploughshare brightE
And harvests brightened the summer dayQ
-
Learning gathered around her feetE
Listening crowds of aspiring youthR
Meek Religion with accents sweetE
Guided her vot'ries in ways o' truthR
Countless church spires pierced the skiesN
Countless temples of Science wooedE
To thought's arena of high empriseN
An eager emulous multitudeE
-
White sails dotted the waters blueS
Hamlets smiled amid valleys greenT
Populous cities sprang and grewS
Where swamp and wilderness erst were seenT
Fleet as the tempest the iron steedE
Shook the hills with his thunderous treadE
From shore to shore with the lightning's speedE
Couriers electric man's errands spedE
-
Then kindred States that had stood apartE
Stretched to each other fraternal handsU
And each to all with a loyal heartE
Bound themselves with enduring bandsU
Then the Angel of Liberty smiled once moreC
Softly singing O Lands well doneV
And the strains were wafted from shore to shoreC
To the far off climes of the setting sunV
-
Here O Sister shall be our restE
Again the beautiful Angel sungW
Long oh long shall these climes be blessedE
Free and fetterless brave and youngW
If only loyal to Him who reignsX
Over all nations the Lord Most HighJ
Monarch of Heaven's serene domainsX
Ruler of all things below the skyJ
-
Bow to His service O young bright landsU
Give Him the bloom of your joyous youthR
Lift to Him alway adoring handsU
Worship Him ever in love and truthR
So shall ye still as the glad years riseN
Ever more stable and glorious beA
Heir of all loftiest destiniesM
HOPE OF HUMANITY HOME OF THE FREEA
