Onward Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH AIAIGHGH GHGHJHHH

Onward still on though the pathway be drearyA
Though few be the fountains that gladden the wayB
Though the tired spirit grow feeble and wearyA
And droop in the heat of the toil burdened dayB
Green in the distance the hills of thy CanaanC
Lift their bright heads in a tenderer lightD
Where the full boughs with rich fruits overladenC
Spread their luxurious treasures in sightD
-
Onward still onward around us are fallingE
Lengthening shadows as daylight departsF
Up from the past mournful voices are callingE
Often we pause with irresolute heartsF
Wherefore look backward the flower thou didst gatherG
Wounded thy hand with the thorn it concealedH
Onward and stay not the voice of thy FatherG
Calls thee to glory and bliss unrevealedH
-
Onward Earth's radiance fadeth the gloryA
That gilded her brow when the noon was in primeI
Faileth each hour and the chill mist is hoaryA
Gathering thick on the dim shores of timeI
Yet as the stars come out brighter and clearerG
While the day faints in the slow fading westH
So do the home lights grow larger and nearerG
Clearer the ray on the hills of thy restH
-
Onward and stay not the fountain the flowerG
Toward which thou'rt pressing with wearying hasteH
Are but the mirage that floats for an hourG
Glowing and green o'er the desolate wasteH
Yet from the distance come tender home melodiesJ
Borne from the Summer land over the floodH
Lovingly wooing thee homeward and HeavenwardH
To the sweet rest of thy Saviour and GodH
