Whither shall I go from thy SpiritA
-
-
I stood where ocean lashed the sounding shoreB
With his unresting waves and gazed far outC
Upon the billowy strife I saw the deepD
Lifting his watery arms to grasp the cloudsE
While the black clouds stooped from the sable archF
Of the storm darkened heavens and deep to deepD
Answered responsive in the ceaseless roarB
Of thunders and of floodsG
-
Here then I am aloneH
And this is solitude I murmured lowI
As in the presence of the risen stormJ
I bowed my head abashed AloneH
The echoing concave of the skies repliedK
Alone the waves responded and the windsL
In hollow murmurs answered back AloneH
-
Thou canst not be alone for God is hereM
Yon mighty waste of waters whose deep voiceN
Goes up unceasingly to heaven He holdsO
E'en as a drop within His hollow handP
He makes His dark pavillion stormy cloudsE
The winds and thunders are His uttered voiceN
And the red flames that blaze athwart the skyQ
Are but the lightnings of His awful glanceR
-
-
-
I stood at eve where high in upper airS
A mountain reared its solitary headT
Bathing its forehead in the ruddy lightU
Of cloudless sunset Like a snowy veilV
The white mist gathered o'er the distant plainW
While over all the sunset heavens shoneH
In burning glory and the blushing WestX
Gathered all gorgeous hues into a wreathY
Of wondrous radiance to twine aroundZ
The temples of her monarch ere he soughtA2
The chambers of his restX
-
Full orbed the moonB2
Rode slowly up the east while one by oneC2
Spirits of night lighted the lamps of heavenC2
This is to be alone I whispered lowI
For nature's solemn beauty had a spellD2
To awe my soul to silenceE2
-
What aloneH
Murmured the mountain wind as round my browF2
It waved its rustling pinions What aloneH
Low voices questioned from the sighing pinesG2
Alone the stars repeated to my soulH2
In the Eternal's presence canst thou standP
While from above His awful glories lookI2
While all around beneath thee and withinJ2
Attest His presence and thus idly deemK2
Thou art alone No thou art not aloneH
For God is hereM
-
-
-
It was a summer noonB2
The soft south wind made music 'mid the boughsL2
Of the cool forest whence glad bursts of songM2
Floated unceasing On a mossy bankN2
Starred with pale flowers I laid me down to restX
Yet not to slumber Tenderly the skyQ
Glanced like a loving spirit through the leavesO2
And ever and anon like fleecy goldP2
The yellow sunbeams dropped amid the gloomQ2
Startling the shadows Twas a hallowed sceneR2
Each waving leaf seemed Instinct with glad lifeS2
And every sound was richly freighted withT2
The wealth of harmonyU2
-
Is this to be aloneH
I inly questioned yet my secret soulH2
Needed from Nature no responsive voiceN
For my whole being with a thrill of joyV2
Replied In all the universe of GodW2
There is no solitudeX2
-
O soul of mineY2
Joy in thy wealth of being in the powerZ2
To grasp the Infinite where'er thou turn'stA3
To see Him feel Him near yet most of allB3
Him to adore and love to hear His voiceN
In every breeze in every gentle chimeC3
Of the sweet waters in the song of birdsD3
The hum of insects and all deeper tonesE3
Of Nature's wondrous music yet far moreB
To recognize His Spirit's gentle voiceN
Unto thy spirit whisp'ring tenderlyU2
I am thy Father thy Redeemer thineY2
Amid the devious paths that checker earthF3
And thine in HeavenC2
