I stood where ocean lashed the sounding shore | B |
With his unresting waves and gazed far out | C |
Upon the billowy strife I saw the deep | D |
Lifting his watery arms to grasp the clouds | E |
While the black clouds stooped from the sable arch | F |
Of the storm darkened heavens and deep to deep | D |
Answered responsive in the ceaseless roar | B |
Of thunders and of floods | G |
- | |
Here then I am alone | H |
And this is solitude I murmured low | I |
As in the presence of the risen storm | J |
I bowed my head abashed Alone | H |
The echoing concave of the skies replied | K |
Alone the waves responded and the winds | L |
In hollow murmurs answered back Alone | H |
- | |
Thou canst not be alone for God is here | M |
Yon mighty waste of waters whose deep voice | N |
Goes up unceasingly to heaven He holds | O |
E'en as a drop within His hollow hand | P |
He makes His dark pavillion stormy clouds | E |
The winds and thunders are His uttered voice | N |
And the red flames that blaze athwart the sky | Q |
Are but the lightnings of His awful glance | R |

I stood at eve where high in upper air | S |
A mountain reared its solitary head | T |
Bathing its forehead in the ruddy light | U |
Of cloudless sunset Like a snowy veil | V |
The white mist gathered o'er the distant plain | W |
While over all the sunset heavens shone | H |
In burning glory and the blushing West | X |
Gathered all gorgeous hues into a wreath | Y |
Of wondrous radiance to twine around | Z |
The temples of her monarch ere he sought | A2 |
The chambers of his rest | X |
- | |
Full orbed the moon | B2 |
Rode slowly up the east while one by one | C2 |
Spirits of night lighted the lamps of heaven | C2 |
This is to be alone I whispered low | I |
For nature's solemn beauty had a spell | D2 |
To awe my soul to silence | E2 |
- | |
What alone | H |
Murmured the mountain wind as round my brow | F2 |
It waved its rustling pinions What alone | H |
Low voices questioned from the sighing pines | G2 |
Alone the stars repeated to my soul | H2 |
In the Eternal's presence canst thou stand | P |
While from above His awful glories look | I2 |
While all around beneath thee and within | J2 |
Attest His presence and thus idly deem | K2 |
Thou art alone No thou art not alone | H |
For God is here | M |

It was a summer noon | B2 |
The soft south wind made music 'mid the boughs | L2 |
Of the cool forest whence glad bursts of song | M2 |
Floated unceasing On a mossy bank | N2 |
Starred with pale flowers I laid me down to rest | X |
Yet not to slumber Tenderly the sky | Q |
Glanced like a loving spirit through the leaves | O2 |
And ever and anon like fleecy gold | P2 |
The yellow sunbeams dropped amid the gloom | Q2 |
Startling the shadows Twas a hallowed scene | R2 |
Each waving leaf seemed Instinct with glad life | S2 |
And every sound was richly freighted with | T2 |
The wealth of harmony | U2 |
- | |
Is this to be alone | H |
I inly questioned yet my secret soul | H2 |
Needed from Nature no responsive voice | N |
For my whole being with a thrill of joy | V2 |
Replied In all the universe of God | W2 |
There is no solitude | X2 |
- | |
O soul of mine | Y2 |
Joy in thy wealth of being in the power | Z2 |
To grasp the Infinite where'er thou turn'st | A3 |
To see Him feel Him near yet most of all | B3 |
Him to adore and love to hear His voice | N |
In every breeze in every gentle chime | C3 |
Of the sweet waters in the song of birds | D3 |
The hum of insects and all deeper tones | E3 |
Of Nature's wondrous music yet far more | B |
To recognize His Spirit's gentle voice | N |
Unto thy spirit whisp'ring tenderly | U2 |
I am thy Father thy Redeemer thine | Y2 |
Amid the devious paths that checker earth | F3 |
And thine in Heaven | C2 |
