Sleep gentle mysterious healerA
Come down with thy balm cup to meB
Come down O thou mystic revealerA
Of glories the day may not seeB
For dark is the cloud that is o'er meB
And heavy the shadows that fallC
And lone is the pathway before meB
And far off the voice that doth callC
Faintly yet tenderly everA
From over the dark river callC
-
Let me bask for an hour in the sun rayA
That wraps him forever in lightD
Awhile tread his flowery pathwayA
Through bowers of unfailing delightD
Again clasp the hands I lost sight ofE
In the chill mist that hung o'er the tideF
What time with the pale silent boatmanG
I saw him away from me glideF
Out into the fathomless myst'ryA
All silent and tranquillized glideF
-
Let me look in those eyes so much brighterA
For the years they have gazed on the SonG
On that pure brow grown purer and whiterA
In the smile of God's glorified OneG
Let me rest for a while with closed eyelidsH
On the bank of Life's river to hearA
The song he has learned since he left meB
Breathed tenderly sweet in my earA
The song he has learned of the angelsI
And saved ones breathed soft in my earA
-
Thou canst not what hast thou not enteredJ
The gates of yon city of lightD
Not walked in the flower bordered pathwayA
Of the saved ones in raiment of whiteD
Never stood on the bank of Life's RiverA
Where gather the glorified throngK
Or glowed with emotion ecstaticL
'Neath the swell of their rapturous songK
That song he has learned since he left meB
The redeemed ones' exultant new songK
-
O Saviour the wounded heart's HealerA
I turn from my sorrow to theeB
The gracious and tender RevealerA
Of glories thy ransomed shall seeB
They will pass the dark cloud that is o'er meB
The shadows that darken my skyM
And the desolate pathway before meB
Will lead to thy mansions on highM
And with him I shall rest in thy presenceN
Forever and ever on highM
