Rhyme Scheme: AABCBDEBF GDGHIDGECBEEJ DKGECAELEBBM AABEBEGECG GDGGENCDCA GCBDJED ECBCBBEADCDBD KDDCCOCDM'Twas a balmy day in Autumn | A |
In the drowsy dreamy Autumn | A |
When from out the quiet woodland | B |
Sounds of rustling leaves came only | C |
Leaves that floated softly earthward | B |
And the streamlets had a murmur | D |
Such as wanders through our visions | E |
In the hushed and starry midnight | B |
Low soft murmur full of music | F |
- | |
With the small hand of her darling | G |
Clasped in her's there came a mother | D |
To an Artist fondly asking | G |
For the picture of her pet lamb | H |
Winsome pet lamb full of child life | I |
Full of merry ringing laughter | D |
Laughter that went up unceasing | G |
Like the happy chime of streamlets | E |
Singing thro' some mountain valley | C |
Like the bird song in the forest | B |
In the time of early roses | E |
Like the tinkle of sweet waters | E |
Dripping o'er a marble fountain | J |
- | |
And the child's glad eyes grew brighter | D |
As she saw her own sweet image | K |
From its little case look smiling | G |
Back upon her radiant features | E |
Saw the clustering curls fall softly | C |
Round the peach blow neck and bosom | A |
Saw the lips two tiny rose buds | E |
And the scarce shown pearls that edged them | L |
And the quivering laughing lashes | E |
Of the eager eyes were lifted | B |
In glad wonder as she murmured | B |
Oh it's pretty ain't it ma ma | M |
- | |
Came another day in Autumn | A |
Gloomy sad tempestuous Autumn | A |
And from out the moaning forest | B |
Came the sound of rushing tempests | E |
As they dashed the sere leaves downward | B |
From the darkly tossing branches | E |
And the turbid streams were chafing | G |
With the rush of swollen waters | E |
That in tones all hoarse and angry | C |
To the rude winds made replying | G |
- | |
With the hot hand of her darling | G |
Clasped in hers that same fond mother | D |
O'er a little couch was bending | G |
Where her little lamb lay moaning | G |
In unquiet fevered slumbers | E |
Oft the blue veined lids would tremble | N |
O'er the half veiled eyes and sadly | C |
Painfully the lips would quiver | D |
As the sobbing breath came slowly | C |
From the scarcely heaving bosom | A |
- | |
Ah that little lamb was treading | G |
'Mid the shadows of the valley | C |
And her spirit ear affrighted | B |
Just had caught the nearer murmur | D |
Of the death stream cold and sullen | J |
Haply wond'ring at the darkness | E |
That was slowly settling round her | D |
- | |
But it passed and o'er those features | E |
Slowly broke a smile so holy | C |
That we deemed the angels gathered | B |
Round her in the gloomy valley | C |
Then the life light gently faded | B |
From those eyes as fades the sunset | B |
From the peaceful summer heavens | E |
Stiller grew the little bosom | A |
And the sobbing breath grew fainter | D |
And the fading smile more sweetly | C |
Played around those lips till slumber | D |
Strange deep slumber slowly settled | B |
In its marble stillness o'er her | D |
- | |
Ah that little tear stained image | K |
Now is all that's left thee mother | D |
Of thy little dark eyed daughter | D |
Ever as it smiles upon thee | C |
From its tiny case how keenly | C |
Will thy heart strings thrill with anguish | O |
As that voice again comes to thee | C |
And again those sweet lips murmur | D |
Oh it's pretty ain't it ma ma | M |
