'Twas a balmy day in AutumnA
In the drowsy dreamy AutumnA
When from out the quiet woodlandB
Sounds of rustling leaves came onlyC
Leaves that floated softly earthwardB
And the streamlets had a murmurD
Such as wanders through our visionsE
In the hushed and starry midnightB
Low soft murmur full of musicF
-
With the small hand of her darlingG
Clasped in her's there came a motherD
To an Artist fondly askingG
For the picture of her pet lambH
Winsome pet lamb full of child lifeI
Full of merry ringing laughterD
Laughter that went up unceasingG
Like the happy chime of streamletsE
Singing thro' some mountain valleyC
Like the bird song in the forestB
In the time of early rosesE
Like the tinkle of sweet watersE
Dripping o'er a marble fountainJ
-
And the child's glad eyes grew brighterD
As she saw her own sweet imageK
From its little case look smilingG
Back upon her radiant featuresE
Saw the clustering curls fall softlyC
Round the peach blow neck and bosomA
Saw the lips two tiny rose budsE
And the scarce shown pearls that edged themL
And the quivering laughing lashesE
Of the eager eyes were liftedB
In glad wonder as she murmuredB
Oh it's pretty ain't it ma maM
-
Came another day in AutumnA
Gloomy sad tempestuous AutumnA
And from out the moaning forestB
Came the sound of rushing tempestsE
As they dashed the sere leaves downwardB
From the darkly tossing branchesE
And the turbid streams were chafingG
With the rush of swollen watersE
That in tones all hoarse and angryC
To the rude winds made replyingG
-
With the hot hand of her darlingG
Clasped in hers that same fond motherD
O'er a little couch was bendingG
Where her little lamb lay moaningG
In unquiet fevered slumbersE
Oft the blue veined lids would trembleN
O'er the half veiled eyes and sadlyC
Painfully the lips would quiverD
As the sobbing breath came slowlyC
From the scarcely heaving bosomA
-
Ah that little lamb was treadingG
'Mid the shadows of the valleyC
And her spirit ear affrightedB
Just had caught the nearer murmurD
Of the death stream cold and sullenJ
Haply wond'ring at the darknessE
That was slowly settling round herD
-
But it passed and o'er those featuresE
Slowly broke a smile so holyC
That we deemed the angels gatheredB
Round her in the gloomy valleyC
Then the life light gently fadedB
From those eyes as fades the sunsetB
From the peaceful summer heavensE
Stiller grew the little bosomA
And the sobbing breath grew fainterD
And the fading smile more sweetlyC
Played around those lips till slumberD
Strange deep slumber slowly settledB
In its marble stillness o'er herD
-
Ah that little tear stained imageK
Now is all that's left thee motherD
Of thy little dark eyed daughterD
Ever as it smiles upon theeC
From its tiny case how keenlyC
Will thy heart strings thrill with anguishO
As that voice again comes to theeC
And again those sweet lips murmurD
Oh it's pretty ain't it ma maM
