I am doing no good said a little rillA
As it rippled along at the foot of a hillA
I am doing no good with my babbling hereB
No one is listening no one is nearC
-
'No good no good ' said a violet blueD
As it shook from its petals the sparkling dewD
And opened its wondering azure eyesE
To the soft clear light of the morning skiesE
-
'No good ' said a willow tree bending lowF
To kiss the rivulet say not soF
Daily and hourly I draw from theeG
The grace and beauty that dwell with meG
And the rustling reeds in the marge that stoodH
Reproachfully murmured 'no good no good '-
'No good ' indeed cried a dainty birdI
And she sprang from her nest as the sound she heardI
And fluttered her wings o'er the sorrowing streamJ
While her bright plumes flashed in the morning beamJ
Peace peace my brook and the young leaves stirredI
At the gushing notes of the happy birdI
Do you not nourish the dear beech treeG
That spreads its shelter for mine and meG
You give yon wild rose its beauteous hueD
And yonder violet its tender blueD
And yonder willow its foliage fairK
And yonder lily its fragrance rareK
The sun is gracious and kind we thinkL
But to you my brooklet we come to drinkL
His beams with glory and warmth are rifeM
But you afford us the cup of lifeM
Gentle rivulet cease to pineN
Sing and be happy for me and mineN
-
And me said the lily and me and meG
Said violet and rose bud and willow treeG
And rustling reeds and the gray old beechO
Tossing his arms high out of reachO
Fluttering insect and waving treeG
Murmured and rustled for me and meG
-
Then the rivulet brightening sped alongP
With a freer step and a gladder songP
Through many a valley and meadow greenQ
Making her flowery foot prints seenQ
Deepening ever and broadening outR
Greeting the hills with a joyous shoutR
Greeting the rocks with a soft caressS
And singing still in her joy's excessS
Till her song swelled out to an anthem freeG
As she caught the flash of the distant SeaG
The glorious Sea that with answering toneT
Welcomed his guest from the hill side loneT
-
Then the Stream shook hands with the kingly mainU
And glancing back to her source againV
Beheld each place where her steps had beenW
Glowing in tenderest loveliest greenQ
Saw beauty and fruitfulness fresh and fairK
Wherever her gladdening footsteps wereX
And caught from the green hills far awayY
The echo of many a woodland layY
And the perfume of many a wild flower borneZ
On the scented wings of the dewy mornZ
-
And then the rivulet understoodH
That all along she'd been doing goodH
That a rich green belt on Earth's sunny breastA2
Was left to tell of her mission blestA2
That Earth with lovelier flowers was rifeM
For her calm footsteps and patient lifeM
That giving much she had gathered moreB2
Winning an ever increasing storeB2
And at length unfettered and strong and freeG
A home she had found with the glorious SeaG
