I Am Doing No Good! Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEE FFGGH IIJJIIGGDDKKLLMMNN GGOOGG PPQQRRSSGGTT UVWQKXYYZZ HHA2A2MMB2B2GGI am doing no good said a little rill | A |
As it rippled along at the foot of a hill | A |
I am doing no good with my babbling here | B |
No one is listening no one is near | C |
- | |
'No good no good ' said a violet blue | D |
As it shook from its petals the sparkling dew | D |
And opened its wondering azure eyes | E |
To the soft clear light of the morning skies | E |
- | |
'No good ' said a willow tree bending low | F |
To kiss the rivulet say not so | F |
Daily and hourly I draw from thee | G |
The grace and beauty that dwell with me | G |
And the rustling reeds in the marge that stood | H |
Reproachfully murmured 'no good no good ' | - |
'No good ' indeed cried a dainty bird | I |
And she sprang from her nest as the sound she heard | I |
And fluttered her wings o'er the sorrowing stream | J |
While her bright plumes flashed in the morning beam | J |
Peace peace my brook and the young leaves stirred | I |
At the gushing notes of the happy bird | I |
Do you not nourish the dear beech tree | G |
That spreads its shelter for mine and me | G |
You give yon wild rose its beauteous hue | D |
And yonder violet its tender blue | D |
And yonder willow its foliage fair | K |
And yonder lily its fragrance rare | K |
The sun is gracious and kind we think | L |
But to you my brooklet we come to drink | L |
His beams with glory and warmth are rife | M |
But you afford us the cup of life | M |
Gentle rivulet cease to pine | N |
Sing and be happy for me and mine | N |
- | |
And me said the lily and me and me | G |
Said violet and rose bud and willow tree | G |
And rustling reeds and the gray old beech | O |
Tossing his arms high out of reach | O |
Fluttering insect and waving tree | G |
Murmured and rustled for me and me | G |
- | |
Then the rivulet brightening sped along | P |
With a freer step and a gladder song | P |
Through many a valley and meadow green | Q |
Making her flowery foot prints seen | Q |
Deepening ever and broadening out | R |
Greeting the hills with a joyous shout | R |
Greeting the rocks with a soft caress | S |
And singing still in her joy's excess | S |
Till her song swelled out to an anthem free | G |
As she caught the flash of the distant Sea | G |
The glorious Sea that with answering tone | T |
Welcomed his guest from the hill side lone | T |
- | |
Then the Stream shook hands with the kingly main | U |
And glancing back to her source again | V |
Beheld each place where her steps had been | W |
Glowing in tenderest loveliest green | Q |
Saw beauty and fruitfulness fresh and fair | K |
Wherever her gladdening footsteps were | X |
And caught from the green hills far away | Y |
The echo of many a woodland lay | Y |
And the perfume of many a wild flower borne | Z |
On the scented wings of the dewy morn | Z |
- | |
And then the rivulet understood | H |
That all along she'd been doing good | H |
That a rich green belt on Earth's sunny breast | A2 |
Was left to tell of her mission blest | A2 |
That Earth with lovelier flowers was rife | M |
For her calm footsteps and patient life | M |
That giving much she had gathered more | B2 |
Winning an ever increasing store | B2 |
And at length unfettered and strong and free | G |
A home she had found with the glorious Sea | G |
