HONOR TO LABOR it giveth healthA
Honor to labor it bringeth wealthA
Honor to labor our glorious landB
Displayeth its triumphs on every handB
It has smoothed the plains laid the forests lowC
And brightened the vales with the harvest's glowC
Reared cities vast with their marts of tradeD
Where erst undisturbed lay the woodland shadeD
Brought up from the depths of the teeming mineE
Its treasured stores in the light to shineE
Sent Commerce forth on his tireless wingsF
In search of all precious and goodly thingsF
Forth to the ice bound Northern seasG
And to bright isles fanned by the Southern breezeG
Where the Orange deepens its sunset dyesH
And the Cocoa ripens 'neath glowing skiesH
To the sunny islands of Austral climesI
To lands undreamt of in elder timesI
Till every region and clime and zoneJ
Has yielded its treasures to bless our ownJ
-
Honor to Labor it diveth deepK
To dim sea caves where bright treasures sleepK
And dareth with curious quest exploreL
The ancient wonders of Ocean's floorL
It fearless roams over Deserts vastM
Where destruction rides on the Simoom's blastM
And trackless sands have for ages frownedN
O'er cities in ancient song renownedN
It climbs where the dazzling glaciers lieO
Changeless and cold 'neath a glowing skyO
And leaves the trace of its triumphs proudP
Above the regions of storm and cloudP
-
The Ocean once an untravelled wasteQ
By feet adventurous never passedM
Spread forth to the solemn skies aloneJ
Its restless waters to man unknownJ
Imagination with eager questR
Went forth o'er its bosom with vague unrestR
To loneliest regions devoid of lightS
Where dark Cimmerii dwelt in nightS
Or peopled its realms undiscovered loneJ
With phantoms of horror and shapes unknownJ
-
But Labor came and with kindling glanceT
Boldly he traversed the far expanseT
Scatt'ring the shadows of ancient nightS
And lifting a glad New World to lightS
Now a realm of life is the glorious SeaU
A peopled realm of the bold and freeU
Where the proud ship glides like a thing of lifeV
And laughs at the storms and the billows' strifeV
Vast highway of nations above whose deepsU
Commerce with tireless navies sweepsU
And Life goes forth in its glad unrestR
Buoyantly treading the waves' white crestR
-
Honor to Labor his strong right handB
Old frightful chasms has boldly spannedB
And hung his teeming thoroughfares highO
'Twixt rushing torrent and bending skyO
He has harnessed Steam to the flying carW
And sent it from ocean to ocean afarW
Pierced strong ribbed mountains that barred his wayX
And oped through their caverns a broad highwayX
Taught the lightning to carry his messages forthY
From West to East and from South to NorthY
And flash his thoughts through the depths profoundN
Of Ocean the Earth's circumference roundN
Made Light his servant to do his willZ
With faultless pencil and subtlest skillZ
Limning the features most dear in lifeV
Of friend or husband or child or wifeV
And compressing into a single hourA2
The work of months of artistic powerA2
-
Honor to Labor with steady eyeO
He has fearlessly traversed the midnight skyO
And followed the mazy perplexing danceU
Of planets and moons thro' the far expanseU
Their orbits periods weight and sizeU
Studied with heedful and cautious eyesU
And forced the haughty imperial sunB2
To answer his inquiries one by oneB2
He has tracked the comet's erratic flightS
Through the silent star fields of primal nightS
Walked through the depths of old nebulaeZ
With flashing glance and with footstep freeU
And seen spin round him in wildering flightS
Systems and suns while the infiniteC2
Of God's great universe stretched awayX
Farther far than e'en thought might strayX
-
Honor to Labor the mariner singsU
As forth to the breezes his sails he flingsU
It has made us lords of the boundless deepK
Fearlessly over the waves we sweepK
-
Honor to Labor the traveller criesU
As forth in the rushing tram he fliesU
We may rival the speed of the bird's swift wingD2
As he joyously soars thro' the skies of SpringD2
And the fetterless wind on its pinions freeU
Is scarcely more fleet in its course than weU
-
Honor to Labor the student criesU
As he gazes around him with joyful eyesU
Honor to Labor the teeming pressU
Pours forth its treasures the world to blessU
From the pictured pages where childhood's eyeO
Findeth a world of bright imageryU
To the massive tome 'mid whose treasures vastM
Lie the time dimmed records of ages pastM
We may wander and revel yet ever findE2
Supplies exhaustless for heart and mindE2
We may turn to the Past to the ages fledF2
And converse hold with the gifted deadF2
Old climes of historic fame exploreL
And gather the gems of their buried loreL
With Prophet bards seek inspiring themesU
Or muse alone by old fabled streamsU
With the Poet take our enraptured flightS
And woo the Muse on Parnassus' heightS
Take fair Philosophy by the handB
And roam with her through her native landB
May win from the God inspired of EarthG2
Heavenly treasures of priceless worthG2
Till the mental stores of all ages flownJ
And all gifted minds we have made our ownJ
-
Honor to Labor of body or mindE2
That hath for its object the good of mankindE2
The Farmer who cheerily ploughs the soilZ
And gathers the fruit of his hopeful toilZ
The strong Mechanic whose manly browH2
Weareth of labor the healthful glowZ
The bold Inventor beneath whose handsU
The useful engine completed standsU
The Artist who with unrivalled skillZ
Creations of loveliness forms at willZ
The Teacher who sows in the minds of youthI2
Seeds of precious undying truthI2
The pale faced Student who worn with toilZ
Consumes o'er his studies the midnight oilZ
The man of Science with earnest mindE2
Who toils to enlighten and bless mankindE2
To themselves their race and their country trueJ2
Honor all honor to such is dueJ2
