I hear the beat of the unresting tideA
On either shore as swiftly on I glideA
With eager haste the narrow channel o'erB
Which links the floods behind with those beforeC
I hear behind me as I onward glideA
Faint farewell voices blending with the tideA
While from beyond now near now far awayD
Come stronger voices chiding each delayD
And drowning oft with wild discordant burstE
The melancholy minor of the firstE
-
Farewell farewell ye leave us far behind youF
Tis thus the bright winged Hours sigh from the PastG
Ye leave us and the coming ones will find youF
Still vainly dreaming they will ever lastG
Still trifling with the gifts all fresh and glowingH
Each in its turn will scatter in your wayD
Still chasing airy phantoms though well knowingH
That ere you grasp them they will melt awayD
Farewell farewellI
-
Haste haste hasteJ
Thus from the Future the voices ringH
The air is balmy with breath of springH
The waters sleep in the morning lightK
The storms are hushed and the skies are brightK
Haste haste hasteJ
-
Isles of beauty and bloom are hereL
Groves whose leafage is never sereM
Teeming harvests of boundless wealthN
Peace and plenty and buoyant healthN
Haste haste hasteJ
-
Joy bells ring in the sunny airO
Mirth and music are everywhereO
Bend to the oars and away awayD
While the ripples dance and the breezes playD
Haste haste hasteJ
-
Farewell farewell ye leave us far behind youF
Us the lost Hours that would have blessed you soP
Yet as ye leave us let our strains remind youF
That we not empty handed Heavenward goP
Records we bear of all the good we brought youF
Of all we offered all that ye refusedQ
Of all the lessons we in patience taught youF
Of wasted time of privilege abusedQ
To God's tribunal we those records bearO
Sometime remember they will meet you thereO
Farewell farewellI
