BrokenB
It's only a ring a plain old ringC
Worn down to a thread almostD
Fling it away the useless thingC
What value now can it boastD
Fling it awayE
Yet stay oh stayE
Ere you cast it awayE
There's a tale of the vanished yearsF
That ever will clingC
To that broken ringC
That hallows and endearsF
Oh stayE
In vain in vain What matters it nowG
That tenderest memories clingC
To that thread of gold so wasted and oldH
Who cares for a broken ringC
Fling it awayE

BrokenB
It's only a vase an old stone vaseF
Ancient and out of styleI
That has stood for years in the chimney placeF
Provoking many a smileI
Throw it awayE
Yet stay that vaseF
Held honored placeF
In the sight of prince and peerJ
And the flowers it heldK
Were gathered of oldH
By the lovely and the dearJ
Oh stayE
In vain In vain What matters it nowG
How honored was once its placeF
It is broken and old and the hearts are coldH
That cherished the old stone vaseF
Throw it awayE

BrokenB
It's only a promise as light as airL
Though earnestly solemnly givenB
Made to be broken yet who should careL
Do you think it was heard in HeavenB
Break it to dayE
Yet stay that breathM
Is a blast of deathM
To an innocent human heartN
Unsay the wordO
For God has heardO
And He taketh the wronged one's partN
Break it not to dayE
In vain in vain What matters it nowG
It was only a breath no moreP
A faithless promise a traitor's vowG
Such things have happened beforeP
It's broken to dayE

BrokenB
It's only a heart a human heartN
That has throbbed for years and yearsF
With the burning pain and the cruel smartN
Whose agony knows no tearsF
Cast it away'E
Yet stay oh stayE
A father greyE
And sorrowful prayed for her longQ
And a mother's loveG
Bore to God aboveG
The tale of her poor childs wrongQ
Cast it not awayE
In vain 'Tis a story old and wornR
This story of falsehood's artN
Of the harsh world's withering blight and scornR
Who cares for the broken heartN
That's been cast awayE
