Here is a lantern my little boyA
Said a father to his childB
And yonder's a wood a lonely woodC
Tangled and rough and wildB
And now this night this very hourD
Though gloomy and dark it beE
By the single light of this lamp aloneF
You must cross the wild to meE
-
I'll be on the farther side my sonG
So follow the path you seeE
And at the end of this narrow wayH
Awaiting you I will beE
Thus bidden the child set out but soonI
With the gloomy waste aheadJ
Oppressed with terror and doubt he stoppedK
Shaking with fear and dreadJ
-
Father father I cannot seeE
The forest is thick and blackL
I'm sure there is danger ahead of meE
Please father call me backL
But the father's voice through the gloomy wildB
In answering accents saidJ
Just keep in the light of your lamp my childB
And don't look too far aheadJ
-
Thus cheered the child pressed trustingly onM
Though trembling much with fearN
For around beyond and overheadJ
The forest was dark and drearN
And ever to keep his courage upO
To himself he softly saidJ
He told me to keep in the light of my lampP
And not look too far aheadJ
-
At length the other side was gainedQ
And lo the father was thereN
To welcome his child from the dreary wildB
Where darkness and danger wereN
And why did you fear my son he saidJ
You had plenty of light you seeE
Though it lit but a step at a time enoughR
To guide you safely to meE
-
And besides I was just ahead in the darkS
Though you did not see me at allT
To be sure that no evil or accidentU
Should my darling child befallT
Then remember my son in life's darkest waysV
The simple words that I saidJ
'Just keep in the light of your lamp my childB
And not look too far ahead '-
