Ode To Sleep Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBBCDCD EFEF GHGH BIBI CJCJ IBIB

Gentle divinity how have I meritedA
Whither unfortunate wretch have I strayedB
Thus of thy bounty to lie disenheritedB
I alone whilst every other is paidB
Sleeping are cattle and birds without numberC
Beasts of the wilderness rest in their lairD
Even the hills as if weary feign slumberC
Even the torment sighs soft in the airD
-
Lulled are the shuttering waves of the oceanE
Seas in the lap of the land lie at peaceF
Only for me in monotonous motionE
Day follows day and there comes no releaseF
-
Moonlight starlight light of the morningG
Seven times flit o'er my feverish cheekH
Once again Dawn's chilly hand offers warningG
Whither oh whither for rest shall I seekH
-
Had I the eyes of an Argus nor heededB
Ever to keep my whole body awakeI
Half of the sentries alone being neededB
Still I could never my slumber thirst slakeI
-
Yet if there's one in the arms of a loverC
Scornful of sleep and the joy that sleep bringsJ
Come thou to me I'll not ask thee to coverC
My eyes with the fullest extant of thy wingsJ
-
Happier suitors may sue for such blessingI
I'll beg a touch be it ever so slightB
Of thy wand or a whisk of thy garment caressingI
My eyelids to droop as it crosses the nightB
