Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHIIAn exile captive severed from his home | A |
Torn from the friends he loved in life's sweet spring | B |
Heart broken toils while still his sad thoughts roam | A |
Back to the past which now no joys can bring | B |
Vainly he seeks compassion and relief | C |
In human hearts around to cheer or soothe his grief | C |
- | |
As hard the steel so hard the flinty rock | D |
Whose grating echoes jest but at his woe | E |
The quivering iron yields but to the shock | D |
While down his bosom's height the cold drops flow | E |
His bleeding hands show many a sanguine spot | F |
Though seen by human eyes by human hearts forgot | F |
- | |
There's not a sigh his spirit's grief hath sped | G |
There's not a dew drop wrung by tyranny | H |
Nor yet one scorching tear his soul hath shed | G |
Nor bloody stain of silent agony | H |
But God hath seen and hath recorded true | I |
To render unto man according to his due | I |
