Rhyme Scheme: A BABACDED FGFGHIHI JKJKLMLN OIOIPKPK QAQARNRM SISITUTU VIVIWXWX YAYAZIZI A2NA2NOIOI

On Drake's return from his filibustering expedition of the Queen went on board his ship at Deptford and after partaking of a banquet conferred on him the honour of knighthood at the same time declaring herself mightily pleased with all that he had doneA

I wish that I had flourished thenB
When ruffs and raids were in the fashionA
When Shakespeare's art and Raleigh's penB
Encouraged patriotic passionA
For though I draw my happy breathC
Beneath a Queen as good and graciousD
The times of Great ElizabethE
Were more conveniently spaciousD
-
Large hearted age of cakes and aleF
When undeterred by nice conditionsG
Good Master Drake would lightly sailF
On little privateer commissionsG
Careering round with sword and flameH
And no pretence of polished mannersI
He planted out in England's nameH
A most refreshing lot of bannersI
-
Blest era when the reckless tarJ
Elated by a sense of dutyK
Feared not to face his country's BarJ
But freely helped himself to bootyK
Returning home with bulging holdL
The Queen would meet him much excitedM
Pronounce him worth his weight in goldL
And promptly have the hero knightedN
-
No Extra Special piping hotO
Broke out in unexpected PyrrhicsI
No Poet Laureate on the spotO
Composed apologetic lyricsI
Transpiring slowly by and byP
The act was voted one of loyaltyK
The nation winked the other eyeP
And pocketed the usual royaltyK
-
Ere Reuter yet had found his rangeQ
These trifles done across the oceanA
Produced upon the Stock ExchangeQ
No preternatural emotionA
Not yet the Kaiserlich I AMR
Made winged words and then repentedN
He wrote as yet no telegramR
Nor was in fact himself inventedM
-
No Justice Hawkins gauged the faultS
Of irresponsible incursionsI
The early Hawkins gallant saltS
Knew well the charm of such diversionsI
Men never saw that moving sightT
When legal luminaries musterU
And very solemnly indictT
A well conducted filibusterU
-
No Member had the hardy nerveV
To criticise our depredationsI
As unadapted to preserveV
The perfect comity of nationsI
No High Commissioner would doubtW
If brigandage was quite judicialX
Indeed we mostly did withoutW
This rather eminent OfficialX
-
No Ministry would care a rapY
For theoretic arbitrationA
They simply modified the mapY
To meet the latest annexationA
And so without appeal to lawZ
Or other needless waste of tissueI
The Lion where he put his pawZ
Remained and propagated issueI
-
To day we wax exceeding fatA2
On lands our roving fathers raidedN
And blush with holy horror atA2
Their lawless sons who do as they didN
No doubt the age improves a lotO
It grows more honest more veraciousI
But as I said the times are notO
Quite so conveniently spaciousI
