IA
-
-
The corn has turned from grey to redB
Since first my spirit wandered forthC
From the drear cities of the northC
And to Italia's mountains fledB
-
And here I set my face towards homeD
For all my pilgrimage is doneE
Although methinks yon blood red sunE
Marshals the way to Holy RomeD
-
O Blessed Lady who dost holdF
Upon the seven hills thy reignG
O Mother without blot or stainG
Crowned with bright crowns of triple goldF
-
O Roma Roma at thy feetH
I lay this barren gift of songI
For ah the way is steep and longI
That leads unto thy sacred streetH
-

-
-
And yet what joy it were for meJ
To turn my feet unto the southK
And journeying towards the Tiber mouthK
To kneel again at FiesoleL
-
And wandering through the tangled pinesM
That break the gold of Arno's streamN
To see the purple mist and gleamN
Of morning on the ApenninesM
-
By many a vineyard hidden homeD
Orchard and olive garden greyO
Till from the drear Campagna's wayO
The seven hills bear up the domeD

IIIA
-
-
A pilgrim from the northern seasM
What joy for me to seek aloneP
The wondrous temple and the throneP
Of him who holds the awful keysM
-
When bright with purple and with goldF
Come priest and holy cardinalL
And borne above the heads of allL
The gentle Shepherd of the FoldF
-
O joy to see before I dieA
The only God anointed kingQ
And hear the silver trumpets ringQ
A triumph as he passes byA
-
Or at the brazen pillared shrineR
Holds high the mystic sacrificeM
And shows his God to human eyesM
Beneath the veil of bread and wineR
-
-
IVS
-
-
For lo what changes time can bringQ
The cycles of revolving yearsM
May free my heart from all its fearsM
And teach my lips a song to singQ
-
Before yon field of trembling goldF
Is garnered into dusty sheavesM
Or ere the autumn's scarlet leavesM
Flutter as birds adown the woldF
-
I may have run the glorious raceM
And caught the torch while yet aflameT
And called upon the holy nameT
Of Him who now doth hide His faceM
