Under the rose tree's dancing shadeA
There stands a little ivory girlB
Pulling the leaves of pink and pearlB
With pale green nails of polished jadeA

The red leaves fall upon the mouldC
The white leaves flutter one by oneD
Down to a blue bowl where the sunD
Like a great dragon writhes in goldC

The white leaves float upon the airE
The red leaves flutter idly downF
Some fall upon her yellow gownF
And some upon her raven hairE

She takes an amber lute and singsG
And as she sings a silver craneH
Begins his scarlet neck to strainH
And flap his burnished metal wingsG

She takes a lute of amber brightI
And from the thicket where he liesJ
Her lover with his almond eyesJ
Watches her movements in delightI

And now she gives a cry of fearK
And tiny tears begin to startL
A thorn has wounded with its dartL
The pink veined sea shell of her earM

And now she laughs a merry noteN
There has fallen a petal of the roseO
Just where the yellow satin showsO
The blue veined flower of her throatN
