My limbs are wasted with a flameA
My feet are sore with travellingB
For calling on my Lady's nameA
My lips have now forgot to singB
-
O Linnet in the wild rose brakeC
Strain for my Love thy melodyD
O Lark sing louder for love's sakeC
My gentle Lady passeth byE
-
She is too fair for any manF
To see or hold his heart's delightG
Fairer than Queen or courtesanF
Or moonlit water in the nightG
-
Her hair is bound with myrtle leavesH
Green leaves upon her golden hairI
Green grasses through the yellow sheavesH
Of autumn corn are not more fairI
-
Her little lips more made to kissJ
Than to cry bitterly for painF
Are tremulous as brook water isK
Or roses after evening rainF
-
Her neck is like white meliloteG
Flushing for pleasure of the sunF
The throbbing of the linnet's throatG
Is not so sweet to look uponF
-
As a pomegranate cut in twainF
White seeded is her crimson mouthL
Her cheeks are as the fading stainF
Where the peach reddens to the southL
-
O twining hands O delicateG
White body made for love and painF
O House of love O desolateG
Pale flower beaten by the rainF
