I am weary of lying within the chaseA
When the knights are meeting in market placeA
-
Nay go not thou to the red roofed townB
Lest the hoofs of the war horse tread thee downB
-
But I would not go where the Squires rideC
I would only walk by my Lady's sideC
-
Alack and alack thou art overboldC
A Forester's son may not eat off goldC
-
Will she love me the less that my Father is seenD
Each Martinmas day in a doublet greenD
-
Perchance she is sewing at tapestrieE
Spindle and loom are not meet for theeF
-
Ah if she is working the arras brightC
I might ravel the threads by the fire lightC
-
Perchance she is hunting of the deerE
How could you follow o'er hill and mereE
-
Ah if she is riding with the courtC
I might run beside her and wind the morteC
-
Perchance she is kneeling in St DenysG
On her soul may our Lady have gramercyF
-
Ah if she is praying in lone chapelleH
I might swing the censer and ring the bellH
-
Come in my son for you look sae paleI
The father shall fill thee a stoup of aleI
-
But who are these knights in bright arrayE
Is it a pageant the rich folks playE
-
'T is the King of England from over seaF
Who has come unto visit our fair countrieE
-
But why does the curfew toll sae lowJ
And why do the mourners walk a rowJ
-
O 't is Hugh of Amiens my sister's sonK
Who is lying stark for his day is doneK
-
Nay nay for I see white lilies clearE
It is no strong man who lies on the bierE
-
O 't is old Dame Jeannette that kept the hallL
I knew she would die at the autumn fallL
-
Dame Jeannette had not that gold brown hairE
Old Jeannette was not a maiden fairE
-
O 't is none of our kith and none of our kinM
Her soul may our Lady assoil from sinM
-
But I hear the boy's voice chaunting sweetC
'Elle est morte la Marguerite '-
-
Come in my son and lie on the bedC
And let the dead folk bury their deadC
-
O mother you know I loved her trueE
O mother hath one grave room for twoE
