First Verses Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: A BBAACCDDEFAAGGHHIIJJ KKHHLLHHMMHHHHMNOOTRANSLATION FROM THE ENEID BOOK I | A |
- | |
THE god looked out upon the troubled deep | B |
Waked into tumult from its placid sleep | B |
The flame of anger kindles in his eye | A |
As the wild waves ascend the lowering sky | A |
He lifts his head above their awful height | C |
And to the distant fleet directs his sight | C |
Now borne aloft upon the billow's crest | D |
Struck by the bolt or by the winds oppressed | D |
And well he knew that Juno's vengeful ire | E |
Frowned from those clouds and sparkled in that fire | F |
On rapid pinions as they whistled by | A |
He calls swift Zephyrus and Eurus nigh | A |
Is this your glory in a noble line | G |
To leave your confines and to ravage mine | G |
Whom I but let these troubled waves subside | H |
Another tempest and I'll quell your pride | H |
Go bear our message to your master's ear | I |
That wide as ocean I am despot here | I |
Let him sit monarch in his barren caves | J |
I wield the trident and control the waves | J |
He said and as the gathered vapors break | K |
The swelling ocean seemed a peaceful lake | K |
To lift their ships the graceful nymphs essayed | H |
And the strong trident lent its powerful aid | H |
The dangerous banks are sunk beneath the main | L |
And the light chariot skims the unruffled plain | L |
As when sedition fires the public mind | H |
And maddening fury leads the rabble blind | H |
The blazing torch lights up the dread alarm | M |
Rage points the steel and fury nerves the arm | M |
Then if some reverend Sage appear in sight | H |
They stand they gaze and check their headlong flight | H |
He turns the current of each wandering breast | H |
And hushes every passion into rest | H |
Thus by the power of his imperial arm | M |
The boiling ocean trembled into calm | N |
With flowing reins the father sped his way | O |
And smiled serene upon rekindled day | O |
