| Yet tho' he strove with loving skill | A |
| His Brush refused to work his Will | A |

| Dear Maid unless you close your Eyes | B |
| I cannot paint to day he said | C |
| Their Brightness shames the very Skies | B |
| And turns their Turquoise into Lead | C |
| Quoth Phyllis then To save the Skies | B |
| And speed your Brush I'll shut my Eyes | B |

| Now when her Eyes were closed the Dear | D |
| Not dreaming of such Treachery | E |
| Felt a Soft Whisper in her Ear | F |
| Without the Light how can one See | E |
| If you are sure that none can see | E |
| I'll keep them shut said Phyllis Lee | E |
