Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK LFBF MDMDSister sweet sister years have passed away | A |
Since first 'mid warm hearts sunny frank and true | B |
I commenced rhyming on thy natal day | A |
On the green sod where Erin's shamrock grew | B |
- | |
'Twas in that age that ne'er returns again | C |
Whose tears are but as dew on Summer flowers | D |
And young warm hearts beat kindly round us then | C |
And eyes beamed brightly answering love to ours | D |
- | |
And now an exile from my native land | E |
Thinking of well remembered loved Grace Hill | F |
To mine own sister verses I will send | G |
Worthless yet proving that I love her still | F |
- | |
It is thy birthday and I am alone | H |
Thinking of that dear land that gave us birth | I |
The land of hearts that beat to truth alone | H |
The brightest emerald gem of all the earth | I |
- | |
These fond regrets that press around my heart | J |
And bring a pain I cannot rise above | K |
Makes thee still dearer here alone apart | J |
For fate has left me nothing else to love | K |
- | |
Changing life and ever swallowing death | L |
Have taken what I loved against my will | F |
But never mind for thou kind hearted true | B |
Changeless and noble thou art left me still | F |
- | |
Happy returns I surely wish thee Ann | M |
In this new land that's fated to be ours | D |
And may you have a happy heart that can | M |
Enjoy the sunshine and endure the showers | D |
