To Annie On Her Birthday Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK LFBF MDMD

Sister sweet sister years have passed awayA
Since first 'mid warm hearts sunny frank and trueB
I commenced rhyming on thy natal dayA
On the green sod where Erin's shamrock grewB
-
'Twas in that age that ne'er returns againC
Whose tears are but as dew on Summer flowersD
And young warm hearts beat kindly round us thenC
And eyes beamed brightly answering love to oursD
-
And now an exile from my native landE
Thinking of well remembered loved Grace HillF
To mine own sister verses I will sendG
Worthless yet proving that I love her stillF
-
It is thy birthday and I am aloneH
Thinking of that dear land that gave us birthI
The land of hearts that beat to truth aloneH
The brightest emerald gem of all the earthI
-
These fond regrets that press around my heartJ
And bring a pain I cannot rise aboveK
Makes thee still dearer here alone apartJ
For fate has left me nothing else to loveK
-
Changing life and ever swallowing deathL
Have taken what I loved against my willF
But never mind for thou kind hearted trueB
Changeless and noble thou art left me stillF
-
Happy returns I surely wish thee AnnM
In this new land that's fated to be oursD
And may you have a happy heart that canM
Enjoy the sunshine and endure the showersD
