The Rev Mr Young was one stormy day visiting one of his people an old man who lived in great poverty in a lonely cottage a few miles from Jedsburg He found him sitting with his Bible open upon his knees but in outward circumstances of great discomfort the snow drifting in through the roof and under the door and scarcely any fire in the hearth What are you about to day John asked Mr Young on entering Ah sir said John I am sitting under His shadow with great delightA
-
-
They only see the snow heaped on the moorB
The bare trees shivering in the winter's breathC
The icy drift that sifteth through the doorD
Me old and poor waiting the call of deathC
-
They think my cot is bare and comfortlessE
With broken roof and paper mended paneF
They see but poverty and lonelinessE
And think in pity that my death were gainF
-
They know not Master that Thou art so nearG
Thou holdest me I lean upon Thy mightA
I know Thy voice Thy whisperings I hearH
I stay beneath Thy shadow with delightA
-
The royal purple of Thy garment diedI
From Bozrah is spread over even meJ
All my unworthiness my want I hideI
Under Thy princely vesture shelteringlyK
-
Thy hand is underneath my weary headL
Thy strong right hand that saved me long agoM
I'm cradled in Thy arms and comfortedN
What more have I to do with want or woeM
-
What more indeed so sheltered so embracedO
For ever Thou art mine and I am ThineP
Thy banner's love Thy fruit sweet to my tasteO
Thou givest to my lips the Kingdom's wineP
-
How sweetly solemn is this awful placeE
Where all of earth fades out and vanishesE
I cannot fear while I behold Thy faceE
My help my friend the Lord my righteousnessE
-
I do not feel the waters cold and deepQ
Waters to swim in through whose waves I comeR
The love that holds me up is strong to keepQ
'Tis but a little way from this to homeS
-
My sight grows dim my one Redeemer LordT
Bring nearer still the brightness of Thy faceE
I hear Thy voice assuring is Thy wordU
Close to Thy heart is my abiding placeE
-
We're nearing home forever all is wellK
In through the agate windows I can seeJ
The place prepared glory ineffableK
To which in royal love Thou leadest meJ
