From CarlisleA
-
-
The young Prince of Anhalt DessauB
The Dowager's only sonC
Was a sturdy strong limbed fellowD
And a most determined oneC
-
Shook the tutor his locks of silverE
And if I have any skillF
This young Prince of Anhalt DessauB
He will always work his willF
-
I cry to the Wise for wisdomG
I cry for strength to the StrongH
That I train him to stand firmlyI
For the right against the wrongH
-
If he grow to gracious manhoodJ
I shall not have wrought in vainK
And my Fatherland so nobleL
Shall most surely reap the gainK
-
The Dowager in her chamberE
With pride did her blue eyes shineM
Fatherland hath many princesB
But none of them all like mineM
-
He has courage fire and wisdomG
Yet tender of heart is heI
Proud but just and full of pityI
This is as a prince should beI
-
My son growing up so worthyI
Shall comfort my widowed fearsB
And he shall be my strong right handN
Through the cares of future yearsB
-
The Dowager's waiting womenC
Said Our Prince gives up the chaseB
And every day his steed reins heI
Down there in the market placeB
-
He forgets his rank so princelyI
To his grievous harm and lossB
A trap for his youth so tenderE
Is laid by the damsel FosB
-
The Princess rode in her chariotO
Away to the market placeB
With her own proud eyes beholdingP
The beautiful tempter's faceB
-
But she saw a stately maidenC
With such pure and dove like eyesB
Clothed in beauty like a flowerE
Or a saint from ParadiseB
-
No wonder my son so youthfulL
Fixed his heart on one like theeI
For if I were a Prince of DessauB
Willing captive I might beI
-
But you are a doctor's daughterE
My son's of a princely lineM
You may wed with one more humbleL
But never with son of mineM
-
But my son is very wilfulL
We must conquer him with guileL
To foreign courts he shall awayQ
Where most noble ladies smileL
-
One he'll see whose rank is princelyL
Fair of form and fair of faceB
She shall win him by her beautyL
From his love in the market placeB
-
Said the lily maiden weepingP
'Twere well we had never metR
Go my Prince to be with princesB
Be happy and so forgetR
-
Said the Prince of Anhalt DessauB
What's to be God keeps in storeS
I am Prince of Anhalt DessauB
But your lover for evermoreS
-
Duty is the yoke of princesB
It is good I go awayQ
For that widow's son there's blessingP
Who his mother can obeyQ
-
But we who are ruling princesB
Should be patterns of faith and truthT
The Prince thou hast loved my lilyL
Shall never deceive thy youthT
-
For as sure as to the oceanC
Arrow swift flows on the RhineM
I go for my mother's pleasureE
I am coming back for thineM
-
A year past the waiting womenC
Said Our Prince is back againU
And he shows before the EmpireE
That his mother's plans are vainK
-
He came from the courts of EuropeV
He came to his mother's kneeL
But first went to the market placeB
The maiden he loved to seeL
-
Said the Princess Son you're welcomeG
Anhalt Dessau's hope and prideW
Have you well and wisely chosenC
For Dessau a high born brideW
-
I saw many royal beautiesB
Dames courtly and fair and kindX
But with married eyes I saw themY
For my heart was left behindX
-
Said the lady to her councilL
So our plans have failed thus farZ
He'll forget his low born chosenC
When he learns to look on warS
-
While he's gone I'll seek to rid meL
Of the beauty which I dreadA2
I will give a precious dowerB2
To him who shall woo and wedA2
-
Said the Doctor to his daughterE
Here's a life of wealth and easeB
And a fair bridegroom too daughterE
For we must our Princess pleaseB
-
Ah me said the lily maidenC
That I am the cause of strifeC2
Woeful is the gift of beautyL
I'll be an unwilling wifeC2
-
I have no strength for the battleL
No more than a wounded doveD2
O Leopold Anhalt DessauB
Where art thou my only loveD2
-
With a moan of helpless sorrowD
From the bridegroom turned her faceB
And saw a gallant troop of horseB
Drawn up in the market placeB
-
A strong arm is soon around herE
Young Dessau is by her sideW
Draw and defend yourself you wretchE2
Who would dare to claim my brideW
-
Then he stood before his motherE
With a stern and angry faceB
I have stopped a gallant weddingP
Begun in the market placeB
-
The maid thou wouldst give in marriageF2
Is mine by her plighted wordG2
And his blood who would supplant meL
Has reddened on my good swordH2
-
Be a queen in Anhalt DessauB
Let tower and town be thineM
But leave unto me my treasureE
This fair low born love of mineM
-
She's my first love and my last oneC
And never we two shall partI2
I'll take her with rites most holyL
I will bind her to my heartI2
-
Now the holy words are spokenC
At the young Dessau's commandN
He wedded the lily maidenC
And he gave her his left handN
-
What's to be said Anhalt DessauB
Is known but to God aboveD2
But I have obeyed my motherE
Been true to my early loveD2
-
Now must I go to the battleL
Leave mother and bride behindX
My wife be a child to my motherE
Mother to my love be kindX
-
A soldier's life is uncertainC
Let us sternly do our bestJ2
Love and duty be our watchwordG2
And leave to our God the restJ2
-
And thus the high Prince of DessauB
While giving obedience dueK2
To his gracious lady motherE
To his own first love was trueK2
-
-
-
He is gone away to battleL
He's always in high commandN
As a man of vast resourcesB
Who is as the king's right handN
-
Drilling battling planning seigingP
The bravest of all the braveL2
The wisest of all in counselL
Loyal courteous kind and graveL2
-
This was in the time of battlesB
Battles for the native landN
Whatever was in safe keepingP
Was held by the strong right handN
-
Anhalt Dessau bold and daringP
Anhalt Dessau wise and slowD
With a brain full of expedientsB
To subdue or outwit the foeD
-
In each conflict still to conquerE
In each counsel wiser grownM2
Till he stood above his fellowsB
A supporter of the throneM2
-
Till the king in council chamberE
Said My lords we must deviseB
New honours for Anhalt DessauB
My general brave and wiseB
-
Leopold of Anhalt DessauB
First in counsel first in fightN2
What high reward you choose to nameO2
Is yours by undoubted rightN2
-
My Liege to have served my countryL
And King till the strife is o'erE
To be Sovereign Prince of DessauB
Is so much that I ask no moreS
-
Nought for me but that I labourB2
For my country all my lifeC2
If you wish to do me honourB2
Make a princess of my wifeC2
-
I married her with my left handN
For she was of low degreeB2
I'd wed her with my right with bothP2
For so dear is she to meB2
-
We will make thy wife a princessB
Said the King with kindling browB2
God grant she may bring to DessauB
Many sons so brave as thouB2
-
You are Sovereign Prince of DessauB
By the right of princely birthQ2
She is Sovereign Queen of BeautyB2
As fair as there walks the earthQ2
-
She's fairest and you the bravestR2
With love for a joining bandN
Shall rank equal with the noblestS2
That walks in our FatherlandN
-
-
-
Tears passed over Anhalt DessauB
And sprinkled his locks with snowD
He had wealth success and honoursB
And his share of human woeD
-
His fair wife and his goodly sonsB
Filled his heart with joy and prideW
But that heart was wrung with sorrowD
When his only daughter diedW
-
For ah she was long in dyingP
And his love was strong and warmT2
To keep her from an early graveL2
He'd have given his right armU2
-
She was a most winsome maidenC
And she had her mother's faceB
She brought back all his wooing timeV2
His love in the market placeB
-
My daughter he said you're dyingP
You are fading fast awayQ
What is there you would have me doK2
Love before your dying dayQ
-
Thou the kindest and the bravestR2
My father most dear she saidA2
Whate'er you've done has pleased meB2
Take that comfort when I'm deadA2
-
But if you would do me pleasureB2
She said with a lovely smileL
The men whom you've led in battleL
Poor fellows the rank and fileL
-
I'd like to see them marchingP
To feast them with mirth and gleeB2
When laid in my grave so earlyB2
They'll think kindly thoughts of meB2
-
My daughter of all my treasuresB
The loveliest and the bestJ2
I know that my king so graciousB
Will grant you your last requestJ2
-
With banners and martial musicP
With drum beat and trumpet blareB2
They all marched to Anhalt BernbergP
To the palace court yard thereB2
-
With all martial pomp and clangourB2
Were the salutations madeW2
Where supported at the windowD
The dying one was laidW2
-
And tables were spread to feast themY
With plenty that made them groanM2
But away by the Saale riverB2
Old Leopold wept aloneM2
-
-
-
Leopold of Anhalt DessauB
He has reached three score and tenU
They think it time he step asideW
Giving place to younger menU
-
For old fashioned are his tacticsB
And old fashioned too is heB2
And a new king has arisenC
And new counsellors there beB2
-
Still the old man leads the armyB2
But he gets no word of cheerB2
For the young king is impatientX2
And the courtiers laugh and jeerB2
-
The troops are drawn up for battleL
For the long expected fightN2
'Tis my last said Anhalt DessauB
May our God defend the rightN2
-
He stood among the veteransB
Whom he had so often ledA2
And according to his customG
He uncovered his grey headA2
-
We are going into battleL
How many shall come awayQ
Is known to the God of armiesB
Who shall lead us through this dayQ
-
For we have come here to conquerB2
As we conquered everywhereB2
Uncover my lads and ask forB2
The help that we need in prayerB2
-
O God who through life hast led meB2
Help me still this once I prayQ
Nor let the shame of first defeatY2
Come now when my head is greyQ
-
Be thou present with our armyB2
Do Thou let Thy might decideW
But oh if Thou be not with usB
Be not on the other sideW
-
But leave it to drill and manhoodJ
Amen In God's name come onZ2
So Leopold Anhalt DessauB
His last battle fought and wonC
-
And the King rescued from dangerB2
By the victory that dayQ
Lighted from his horse to greet himA3
Clad in his roquelaure greyQ
-
Bowed low to him as a masterB2
In all the warrior's artI2
And then as a friend in greetingP
Pressed the hero to his heartI2
-
Now his sword rests in the scabbardG2
He has done for aye with warB2
For Leopold Anhalt DessauB
Now sleeps with the sons of ThorB2
