I sit by the fire in the gloamingA
In the depths of my easy chairB
And I ponder as old men ponderC
Over times and things that wereC
-
And outside is the gusty rushingA
Of the fierce November blastD
With the snow drift waltzing and whirlingA
And eddying swiftly pastD
-
It's a wild night to be abroad inE
When the ice blast and snow drift meetF
To wreath round all the world of winterC
A shroud and a winding sheetF
-
There's a dash of hail at the windowG
Thick with driving snow is the airB
But I sit here in ease and comfortH
In the depths of my easy chairB
-
I have fought my way in life's battleI
And won Fortune's fickle caressJ
Won from fame just a passing noticeK
And enjoy what is called successJ
-
As I sit here in ease and comfortH
And the shadows they rise and fallL
And the dear old familiar facesM
Look out from the pannelled wallL
-
Ah reminders of living fondnessK
Gleam out in their pictured looksN
And in ranks round from floor to ceilingA
Are my life long friends my booksN
-
The bright wood fire crackles and sparklesO
Leaping up with a sudden glowG
Playing hide and seek with the shadowsP
That flit round me to and froG
-
They come and look over my shoulderC
And they vanish behind my chairB
Ah the notice that life's NovemberC
Has sprinkled with snow my hairB
-
Ah the shadows that gather round meQ
That will never more departR
That are flitting around my chamberC
That are closing around my heartR
-
All the shadows of undone actionsS
And the shadow of deep regretT
Over many occasions wastedU
And of duties alas unmetT
-
Over words that are left unspokenV
And of woe that was left unsharedT
Over high resolutions brokenV
And calls that would not be heardT
-
And the shade of a deeper sorrowG
Still hovers about my chairB
It is this and not life's NovemberC
Has sprinkled with snow my hairB
-
For my life has passed into eveningA
And I sit mid the shadows hereW
Hearing still the shadowy whisperC
That success may be bought too dearX
