I sit by the fire in the gloaming	A
In the depths of my easy chair	B
And I ponder as old men ponder	C
Over times and things that were	C

And outside is the gusty rushing	A
Of the fierce November blast	D
With the snow drift waltzing and whirling	A
And eddying swiftly past	D
	-
It's a wild night to be abroad in	E
When the ice blast and snow drift meet	F
To wreath round all the world of winter	C
A shroud and a winding sheet	F
	-
There's a dash of hail at the window	G
Thick with driving snow is the air	B
But I sit here in ease and comfort	H
In the depths of my easy chair	B

I have fought my way in life's battle	I
And won Fortune's fickle caress	J
Won from fame just a passing notice	K
And enjoy what is called success	J

As I sit here in ease and comfort	H
And the shadows they rise and fall	L
And the dear old familiar faces	M
Look out from the pannelled wall	L

Ah reminders of living fondness	K
Gleam out in their pictured looks	N
And in ranks round from floor to ceiling	A
Are my life long friends my books	N

The bright wood fire crackles and sparkles	O
Leaping up with a sudden glow	G
Playing hide and seek with the shadows	P
That flit round me to and fro	G

They come and look over my shoulder	C
And they vanish behind my chair	B
Ah the notice that life's November	C
Has sprinkled with snow my hair	B

Ah the shadows that gather round me	Q
That will never more depart	R
That are flitting around my chamber	C
That are closing around my heart	R

All the shadows of undone actions	S
And the shadow of deep regret	T
Over many occasions wasted	U
And of duties alas unmet	T
	-
Over words that are left unspoken	V
And of woe that was left unshared	T
Over high resolutions broken	V
And calls that would not be heard	T
	-
And the shade of a deeper sorrow	G
Still hovers about my chair	B
It is this and not life's November	C
Has sprinkled with snow my hair	B
	-
For my life has passed into evening	A
And I sit mid the shadows here	W
Hearing still the shadowy whisper	C
That success may be bought too dear	X
