ORSON GROUTA
-
One of the victims of the Southern PrisonsB
-
-
Sit by me comrade thou and I have stoodC
Shoulder to shoulder on the battle fieldD
And bore us there like men of British bloodE
But comrade this is death and I must yieldD
-
You have been leal my friend and true and triedF
In battle in captivity of meG
Since we went up to worship side by sideF
O'er the green hills I never more shall seeG
-
From this dread prison pen thou shalt go forthH
But I I know it never more shall riseI
Nor see my home in the cool pleasant NorthH
Nor see again my wife's dark mournful eyesI
-
Nor see my children every shining headJ
And merry eye for what know they of griefK
'Twill still their play to know that I am deadJ
But childhood's woe thank God is always briefK
-
Try to cheer Annie in her widowed woeL
Let her hear words of comfort at thy mouthM
But friend I charge thee do not let her knowL
Aught of the tender mercies of the SouthM
-
Tell her that I have never been aloneN
One like the Son of Man was by my sideF
The Everlasting arms were round me thrownN
Of my dear Lord who for our freedom diedF
-
I don't regret that though of British birthO
I have been true to the cause unto deathP
'Tis not alone the Union or the NorthH
It is the people's cause o'er all the earthO
-
And it shall prosper and this slaughter penQ
Shall be a monument of Southern chivalryG
Before the world thus proving to all menQ
Slave power begets and sanctions crueltyG
-
From here went up for years the bondman's cryR
In the same glaring sun and rotting dewS
The white war prisoners' cry of agonyG
To the great God of Battles rises tooS
-
And He who was by suffering perfectedE
Watches the nation's life the captive's painT
And from the strife beside her martyred deadJ
With shield blood cleansed from slavery's broad stainT
-
Columbia shall arise renewed and wearU
Her coronet of stars and round her foldV
Her robe of stripes by righteousness made fairU
Which still exalts the nations as of oldV
-
But I shall rest upon the other sideF
Rest in that place of which no tongue can tellW
And thitherward my wife and babes He'll guideF
Friend life's for thee and death for me Farewell'W
