In the Capitol is mourningA
Mourning and woe this dayB
For a nation's heart is throbbingA
A great man has passed awayB
-
It was yester'even onlyC
Rejoicing wild and highD
Waving flags and shouting peopleE
Proclaimed a victoryC
-
For our God had led our armiesF
In the cause of truth and rightG
It was therefore the brave SouthrenH
Had bowed to Northern mightG
-
Then flashed o'er the land the tidingsI
The flush of joy to quellJ
Fallen is the people's heroK
As William the Silent fellJ
-
The stealthy step of the pantherL
The tiger's cruel eyeD
A flash and the wail of a nationH
Rang in that terrified cryD
-
Shame falls on the daring SouthrenH
Woe on the Southren landM
The stars and bars are quarteredM
With the murderer's bloody handM
-
Well he stood to his duty firmlyC
Rebellion's waves rolled highD
He dared to be true and simpleE
To battle a gilded lieD
-
And the life has died out of treasonH
Died with oppression and wrongN
The shame is wiped from the nationH
Worn as a jewel so longN
-
But he in the hour of triumphO
Who wise and firmly stoodM
Planning for them large merciesF
Lies weltering in his bloodM
-
For a cause so vile meet endingA
To set with a murder stainH
The sum of human villainyH
Should die with the brand of CainH
-
Lay him down with a nation's weepingA
Lay him down with the heart's deep prayerP
That the mantle of the martyrL
Fall on the vacant chairP
