Mr Norman Dewar commission merchant a native of Glengarry Canada who had been assisting Captain McCabe as commissary of the Memphis Relief Committee died of yellow fever after three days illness A brave and gentle nature he was loved by a host of friends and will long be remembered as among the noblest of the band of gallant men who during this fearful epidemic died at the post of dutyA
-
-
Far away from stricken MemphisB
Came the tidings sad and sureC
That among the many fallenD
Fell the clansman Norman DewarE
-
There are eyes unused to weepingF
With the tears of sorrow dimG
Hearts with nature's anguish heavingF
Yet 'tis wrong to weep for himG
-
None who fell in glorious battleH
In the shock of meeting steelI
Fell more bravely died more noblyA
More like son of true LochielA
-
When the cry arose in MemphisB
That the yellow death had comeJ
When the rich in fear were fleeingF
And the poor with terror dumbJ
-
Famine following the feverE
Want of all things awful deathK
When forsaken by their kindredL
Human souls gave up their breathK
-
There were men who felt God's pityA
Strong to do and to endureC
And among these brave and nobleA
At his post stood Norman DewarE
-
Firm and gentle true and tenderE
Knowing all the danger wellA
This true son of old GlengarryA
Stood on duty till he fellA
-
Highland hearts have breasted battleA
Highland veterans show their scarsM
Highland blood has flowed like waterE
In our Gracious Sovereign's warsN
-
We have praised in song and storyA
Those who bravely fought and fellA
For Old England's might and gloryA
For the Queen they love so wellA
-
And shall we this time be silentO
O thou clansman firm and trueP
Shall not loyal brave GlengarryA
Through her tears feel proud of youP
-
Thou hast fought the sternest battleA
Thou hast met the grimmest foeQ
Christ like stood by the forsakenD
Stood till death has laid thee lowQ
-
Praise thy sons dear old GlengarryA
Prompt to do calm to endureC
And among your very noblestR
Set God's hero Norman DewarE
