-
-
We waited for him and the anxious daysB
Melted to years and floated slowly byC
We spoke of him kind words of lofty praiseB
Of yearning love and tender sympathyD
-
We laid by what was his with reverent careE
Started in dreams to greet him coming homeF
But hope deferred left no relief but prayerE
And heart sore longings breathed in one word ComeG
-
We never dreamed of murderous ambush laidA
By savage redskins greedy for the preyH
Of him our darling in the forest laidA
Alone alone ebbing his life awayH
-
He who would not have harmed the meanest thingI
Who carried gentleness to such excessJ
That to the stranger and the sufferingI
His purse meant help his touch was a caressJ
-
Ah me that cruel far off land of goldA
That lured him off beyond the ocean foamF
To roam a stranger among strangers coldA
His blank life only cheered by news from homeF
-
The home that he was never more to seeD
While yet his heart was planning his returnK
Short sharp and swift the message came and heD
Passed to his long home o'er the mystic bourneL
-
And while we watched for him the grass was greenM
Upon his grave swept by the summer airE
There grow strange flowers passes the hunter keenM
The stately caribou and grizly bearE
-
But never more his mother's eyes he'll blessJ
Or with a fond embrace his sisters meetA
No brother's hand will he in welcome pressJ
Nor his hound's bay tell of his coming feetA
-
To us remains the mourner's never moreN
And aching hearts and eyes with sorrow dimO
Thou who at Bethany their sorrow boreN
Draw nigh us also while we weep for himO
