How blessed's the good natured poetA
With little bile and much emotionB
All lovers of the gentle artsC
Send him sincerest greetingsD
-
The admiration of the crowdE
Sounds in his ear like rippling wavesF
He is a stranger to self doubtG
That torture of creative soulsH
-
Lover of comfort and tranquilityI
Shunning audacious satireJ
He firmly dominates the crowdE
With his peace loving lyreK
-
He is not cursed nor driven outG
But worshipped for his splendid mindL
While all his countrymen prepareM
A monument to him in lifeN
-
But fate will show no mercyI
To one whose noble geniusO
Has led him to unmask the crowdE
Expose its passions and mistakesP
-
His heart abrim with hateQ
His lips all clad in satireJ
He wanders down a thorny pathR
His wrathful lyre in handS
-
He is reviled at every stepT
He catches sounds of admirationB
Not in sweet murmurings of praiseU
But in wild cries of enmityI
With disbelief and new beliefV
In his high calling's dreamW
He preaches love to allX
Through venomous denialY
-
His speech's every syllableY
Engenders for him cruel foesZ
And all men whether smart or dullY
Are quick to vilify himA2
-
They curse at him from every sideB2
And only when they see his corpseC2
They'll understand how much he didD2
And that in hate he was yet full of loveE2
