You're unhappy sick at heartA
Oh I know it here such sickness isn't rareB
Nature can but mirrorC
The surrounding povertyD
-
All is ever drear and dismalE
Pastures fields and meadowsF
Wet and drowsy jackdawsF
Resting on the peaked haystacksF
-
Here's a drunken peasant drivingG
His collapsing nagH
Into far off blueish mistsF
Such a gloomy sky It makes one weepI
-
The rich city is no better thoughJ
The same storm clouds race across the skyK
It's hard on the nerves steel shovelsF
Scraping screeching as they clean the streetsF
-
Work's beginning everywhereB
From the fire tower an alarm goes upL
A condemned man's brought outsideM
Where the executioners already waitN
-
At the break of day a prostitute is hurryingG
Home from someone's bedO
Officers inside a hired carriageP
Leave the city there will be a duelE
-
Shopkeepers have roused themselvesF
And they rush to sit behind their countersF
All day long they need to swindleE
If they want to eat their fill at nightQ
-
Listen Cannon fire from the fortressF
There's a flood endangering the capitalE
Someone's died Upon a scarlet cushionR
Lies a first class Anna decorationR
-
Now a yardman beats a thief he got himS
Geese are driven out to slaughterC
From an upper floor the crackleE
Of a shot another suicideM
