they smiled as we taxied home to be metD

cigarettes money allegiance to the mother landH
not knowing despite having read fanon and davenportI
hearing all of j h clarke's lectures supportingJ
nkrumah in ghana and nigeria in the war that there was onceK
a tribe called afro americans that populated the wholeL
of africaM
they stopped running when they learned the packagesN
on the women's heads were heavy and that babies didn'tO
cry and disease is uncomfortable and that villages are funB
only because you knew the feel of good leather on goodP
pavementO
they cried when they saw mercedes benz were as commonB
in lagos as volkswagens are in berlinQ
they shook their heads when they understood there was noR
difference between the french and the english and the americansS
and the afro americans or the tribe next door or the countryT
across the borderU
they were exasperated when they heard sly and the family stoneV
in francophone africa and they finally smiled when little boysW
who spoke no western tongue said james brown with reverenceK
they brought out their cameras and bought out africa's drumsX
when they finally realized that they are strangers all overU
and love is only and always about the lover not the belovedY
they marveled at the beauty of the people and the richnessZ
of the land knowing they could never possess eitherU

for home despite the deadB2
dream they saw a free futureU
