the last time i was homeA
to see my mother we kissedB
exchanged pleasantriesC
and unpleasantries pulled a warmD
comforting silence aroundE
us and read separate booksF
-
i remember the first timeG
i consciously saw herH
we were living in a three roomI
apartment on burns avenueJ
-
mommy always sat in the darkK
i don't know how i knew that but she didL
-
that night i stumbled into the kitchenM
maybe because i've always beenN
a night person or perhaps because i had wetO
the bedP
she was sitting on a chairQ
the room was bathed in moonlight diffused throughJ
those thousands of panes landlords who rentedR
to people with children were prone to put in windowsS
she may have been smoking but maybe notT
her hair was three quarters her heightU
which made me a strong believer in the samson mythV
and very blackW
-
i'm sure i just hung there by the doorX
i remember thinking what a beautiful ladyY
-
she was very deliberately waitingZ
perhaps for my father to come homeA
from his night job or maybe for a dreamA2
that had promised to come byB2
come here she said i'll teach youJ
a poem i see the moonC2
the moon sees meY
god bless the moonC2
and god bless meY
i taught it to my sonM
who recited it for herH
just to say we must learnD2
to bear the pleasuresE2
as we have borne the painsF2
