Deep it is said under yonder pyramid has for ages lain concealed the Table of Emerald on which the thrice great Hermes engraved before the flood the secret of Alchemy that gives gold at will EpicureanA
-
-
That 'Emerald Green of the Pyramid'B
Were I where it is laidB
I'd ask no king for his heavy crownC
As its hidden words were saidB
The pomp and the glitter of worldly prideB
Should fetter my moments notB
And the natural thought of an open mindB
Should govern alone my lotB
-
Would I feast all day revel all nightB
Laugh with a weary heartB
Would I sleep away the breezy mornD
And wake till the stars departB
Would I gain no knowledge and search no deepE
For the wisdom that sages knewF
Would I run to waste with a human mindB
To its noble trust untrueF
-
Oh knew I the depth of that 'Emerald Green '-
And knew I the spell of goldB
I would never poison a fresh young heartB
With the taint of customs oldB
I would bind no wreath to my forehead freeG
In whose shadow a thought would dieB
Nor drink from the cup of revelryG
The ruin my gold would buyB
-
But I'd break the fetters of care worn thingsH
And be spirit and fancy freeG
My mind should go up where it longs to goI
And the limitless wind outfleeJ
I'd climb to the eyries of eagle menK
Till the stars became a scrollJ
And pour right on like the even seaG
In the strength of a governed soulJ
-
Ambition Ambition I've laughed to scornD
Thy robe and thy gleaming swordB
I would follow sooner a woman's eyeB
Or the spell of a gentle wordB
But come with the glory of human mindB
And the light of the scholar's browL
And my heart shall be taught forgetfulnessG
And alone at thy altar bowL
-
There was one dark eye it hath passed awayM
There was one deep tone 'tis notB
Could I see it now could I hear it nowL
Ye were all too well forgotB
My heart brought up from its chambers deepE
The sum of its earthly loveN
But it might not could not buy like HeavenA
And she stole to her rest aboveN
-
That first deep love I have taken backO
In my rayless heart to hideB
With the tear it brought for a burning sealJ
'Twill there forever bideB
I may stretch on now to a nobler kenK
I may live in my thoughts of flameP
The tie is broken that kept me backO
And my spirit is on for fameP
-
But alas I am dreaming as if I knewF
The spell of the tablet greenQ
I forgot how like to a broken reedB
Is the lot on which I leanQ
There is nothing true of my idle dreamR
But the wreck of my early loveN
And my mind is coined for my daily breadB
And how can it soar aboveN
