I had a passion when I was a childA
For a most pleasant idleness In JuneB
When the thick masses of the leaves were stirr'dC
With a just audible murmur and the streamsD
Fainted in their cool places to a lowE
Unnotic'd tinkle and the reapers hungF
Their sickles in the trees and went to sleepG
Then might you find me in an antique chairH
Cushion'd with cunning luxury which stoodI
In the old study corner by a nookJ
Crowded with volumes of the old romanceK
And there the long and quiet summer dayL
Lay I with half clos'd eyelids turning o'erM
Leaf after leaf until the twilight blurr'dC
Their singular and time stain'd charactersN
'Twas a forgetful lore and it is blentC
With dreams that in my fitful slumber cameO
And is remember'd faintly But to dayC
With the strange waywardness of human thoughtC
A story has come back to me which IP
Had long forgotten and I tell it nowQ
Because it hath a savour that I findC
But seldom in the temper of the worldC
-
Angelo turn'd away He was a poorR
Unhonor'd minstrel and he might not breatheS
Love to the daughter of an Earl She rais'dC
Proudly her beautiful head and shook awayC
From her clear temples the luxuriant hairH
And told him it would ever please her wellT
To listen to his minstrelsy but loveU
Was for a loftier lip and then the tearH
Stole to her flashing eye for as she spokeV
There rose up a remembrance of his keenW
Unstooping spirit and his noble heartC
Given her like a sacrifice and she heldC
Her hand for him to kiss and said FarewellT
Think of me Angelo and so pass'd onX
-
The color to his forehead mounted highP
And his thin lip curl'd haughtily and thenY
As if his mood had chang'd he bow'd his headC
Low on his bosom and remain'd awhileZ
Lost in his bitter thoughts and then againY
He lifted to its height his slender formA2
And his moist eye grew clear and his hand pass'dC
Rapidly o'er his instrument while thusB2
He gave his spirit voiceC2
-
It did not need that alter'd lookJ
Nor that uplifted browQ
I had not ask'd thy haughty loveU
Were I as proud as nowQ
My love was like a beating heartC
Unbidden and unstayedC
And had I known but half its powerM
It had not been betray'dC
-
I did not seek thy titled handC
I thought not of thy nameO
I only granted utteranceD2
To one wild thought of flameO
I did not dream thou couldst be mineE2
Or I a thought to theeF2
I only knew my lip must letC
Some burning thought go freeF2
-
I lov'd thee for thy high born graceG2
Thy deep and lustrous eyeP
For the sweet meaning of thy browQ
And for thy bearing highP
I lov'd thee for thy stainless truthH2
Thy thirst for higher thingsI2
For all that to our common lotC
A better temper bringsI2
-
And are they not all thine still thineE2
Is not thy heart as trueJ2
Holds not thy step its noble graceG2
Thy cheek its dainty hueJ2
And have I not an ear to hearK2
A cloudless eye to seeF2
And a thirst for beautiful human thoughtC
That first was stirr'd with theeF2
-
Then why should I turn from thee nowQ
Why should not I love onX
Dreaming of thee by night by dayC
As I have ever doneL2
My service shall be still as lealM2
My love as quenchless burnN2
It shames me of my selfish thoughtC
That dream'd of a returnN2
-
He married her Perhaps it spoils the taleO2
But she had listen'd to his song unseenW
And kept it in her heart and by and byP
When Angelo did service for his kingP2
And was prefer'd to honor she betray'dC
Her secret in some delicate way that IP
Do not remember and so ends the taleO2
