The Declaration Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHHIJKLMNOPQRS TRRU| 'Twas late and the gay company was gone | A |
| And the light lay soft on the deserted room | B |
| From alabaster vases and a scent | C |
| Of orange leaves and sweet verbena came | D |
| Through the unshutter'd window on the air | E |
| And the rich pictures with their dark old tints | F |
| Hung like a twilight landscape and all things | G |
| Seem'd hush'd into a slumber Isabel | H |
| The dark eyed spiritual Isabel | H |
| Was leaning on her harp and I had stay'd | I |
| To whisper what I could not when the crowd | J |
| Hung on her look like worshippers I knelt | K |
| And with the fervor of a lip unused | L |
| To the cool breath of reason told my love | M |
| There was no answer and I took the hand | N |
| That rested on the strings and press'd a kiss | O |
| Upon it unforbidden and again | P |
| Besought her that this silent evidence | Q |
| That I was not indifferent to her heart | R |
| Might have the seal of one sweet syllable | S |
| I kiss'd the small white fingers as I spoke | T |
| And she withdrew them gently and upraised | R |
| Her forehead from its resting place and look'd | R |
| Earnestly on me She had been asleep | U |
