The Declaration Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHHIJKLMNOPQRS TRRU

'Twas late and the gay company was goneA
And the light lay soft on the deserted roomB
From alabaster vases and a scentC
Of orange leaves and sweet verbena cameD
Through the unshutter'd window on the airE
And the rich pictures with their dark old tintsF
Hung like a twilight landscape and all thingsG
Seem'd hush'd into a slumber IsabelH
The dark eyed spiritual IsabelH
Was leaning on her harp and I had stay'dI
To whisper what I could not when the crowdJ
Hung on her look like worshippers I kneltK
And with the fervor of a lip unusedL
To the cool breath of reason told my loveM
There was no answer and I took the handN
That rested on the strings and press'd a kissO
Upon it unforbidden and againP
Besought her that this silent evidenceQ
That I was not indifferent to her heartR
Might have the seal of one sweet syllableS
I kiss'd the small white fingers as I spokeT
And she withdrew them gently and upraisedR
Her forehead from its resting place and look'dR
Earnestly on me She had been asleepU
