Scene In Gethsemane Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIFDJHKLHFHHM CHNONPQHPRSBTURVHHWF SXBLAYZFOA2| The moon was shining yet The Orient's brow | A |
| Set with the morning star was not yet dim | B |
| And the deep silence which subdues the breath | C |
| Like a strong feeling hung upon the world | D |
| As sleep upon the pulses of a child | E |
| 'Twas the last watch of night Gethsemane | F |
| With its bath'd leaves of silver seem'd dissolv'd | G |
| In visible stillness and as Jesus' voice | H |
| With its bewildering sweetness met the ear | I |
| Of his disciples it vibrated on | F |
| Like the first whisper in a silent world | D |
| They came on slowly Heaviness oppress'd | J |
| The Saviour's heart and when the kindnesses | H |
| Of his deep love were pour'd he felt the need | K |
| Of near communion for his gift of strength | L |
| Was wasted by the spirit's weariness | H |
| He left them there and went a little on | F |
| And in the depth of that hush'd silentness | H |
| Alone with God he fell upon his face | H |
| And as his heart was broken with the rush | M |
| Of his surpassing agony and death | C |
| Wrung to him from a dying universe | H |
| Were mightier than the Son of man could bear | N |
| He gave his sorrows way and in the deep | O |
| Prostration of his soul breathed out the prayer | N |
| Father if it be possible with thee | P |
| Let this cup pass from me Oh how a word | Q |
| Like the forc'd drop before the fountain breaks | H |
| Stilleth the press of human agony | P |
| The Saviour felt its quiet in his soul | R |
| And though his strength was weakness and the light | S |
| Which led him on till now was sorely dim | B |
| He breathed a new submission Not my will | T |
| But thine be done oh Father As he spoke | U |
| Voices were heard in heaven and music stole | R |
| Out from the chambers of the vaulted sky | V |
| As if the stars were swept like instruments | H |
| No cloud was visible but radiant wings | H |
| Were coming with a silvery rush to earth | W |
| And as the Saviour rose a glorious one | F |
| With an illumin'd forehead and the light | S |
| Whose fountain is the mystery of God | X |
| Encalm'd within his eye bow'd down to him | B |
| And nerv'd him with a ministry of strength | L |
| It was enough and with his godlike brow | A |
| Re written of his Father's messenger | Y |
| With meekness whose divinity is more | Z |
| Than power and glory he return'd again | F |
| To his disciples and awak'd their sleep | O |
| For he that should betray him was at hand | A2 |
