The moon was shining yet The Orient's browA
Set with the morning star was not yet dimB
And the deep silence which subdues the breathC
Like a strong feeling hung upon the worldD
As sleep upon the pulses of a childE
'Twas the last watch of night GethsemaneF
With its bath'd leaves of silver seem'd dissolv'dG
In visible stillness and as Jesus' voiceH
With its bewildering sweetness met the earI
Of his disciples it vibrated onF
Like the first whisper in a silent worldD
They came on slowly Heaviness oppress'dJ
The Saviour's heart and when the kindnessesH
Of his deep love were pour'd he felt the needK
Of near communion for his gift of strengthL
Was wasted by the spirit's wearinessH
He left them there and went a little onF
And in the depth of that hush'd silentnessH
Alone with God he fell upon his faceH
And as his heart was broken with the rushM
Of his surpassing agony and deathC
Wrung to him from a dying universeH
Were mightier than the Son of man could bearN
He gave his sorrows way and in the deepO
Prostration of his soul breathed out the prayerN
Father if it be possible with theeP
Let this cup pass from me Oh how a wordQ
Like the forc'd drop before the fountain breaksH
Stilleth the press of human agonyP
The Saviour felt its quiet in his soulR
And though his strength was weakness and the lightS
Which led him on till now was sorely dimB
He breathed a new submission Not my willT
But thine be done oh Father As he spokeU
Voices were heard in heaven and music stoleR
Out from the chambers of the vaulted skyV
As if the stars were swept like instrumentsH
No cloud was visible but radiant wingsH
Were coming with a silvery rush to earthW
And as the Saviour rose a glorious oneF
With an illumin'd forehead and the lightS
Whose fountain is the mystery of GodX
Encalm'd within his eye bow'd down to himB
And nerv'd him with a ministry of strengthL
It was enough and with his godlike browA
Re written of his Father's messengerY
With meekness whose divinity is moreZ
Than power and glory he return'd againF
To his disciples and awak'd their sleepO
For he that should betray him was at handA2
